totally agree with your comment on that Natasha post. I feel like that line wasn't executed well in the writing and due to that it's being grossly misinterpreted which is incredibly annoying to me. understandable but annoying
exactly. joss whedon has this problem (at least in films) where he wants to say something but executes it really poorly. this also happened with steve in “the avengers” (which people had a huge problem with but i didn’t really) and i think the biggest complaint i have in this film about natasha is her romance arc with bruce. keep in mind, i don’t really ship her with clint or bucky or whatever. i prefer natasha alone and don’t think she NEEDS anyone, but of all the people i think bucky is the one she could connect with the most. but i digress.
her saying she’s a monster has really nothing to do with the fact that she can’t have kids. it’s that she chose (albeit hesitantly, or so it seemed) to have this done and makes the killing easier. it’s true. you have no kids, no maternal instinct to save anything or anyone you love because you’re practically a killing machine.
the thing with bruce is i can see how, but again, really poor execution. the problem also isn’t just with joss. he wanted a more heartfelt film whereas disney/marvel wanted more action and those two don’t necessarily mesh well. he also didn’t deal with nat’s problem of making new covers for herself or having her entire past exposed to the world, etc. so i find that incredibly sloppy on his part, when he’s been so gun ho about black widow and all of that. however this isn’t a solo widow film. it’s an avengers film and he had to fit 500 characters in one film and that isn’t easy either.
having said that, though, people saying her entire purpose in the film was for bruce makes me angry.
1) she still kicked major ass without the help of anyone.
2) this film REALLY highlights the relationship she has with clint. one of solid and undeniable friendship.
3) it showed a very different side of her (with kids, her own vulnerability which, btw, she does have in other characterizations.)
and 4) how much the team actually does need her, ie: “always picking up after you boys.”/picking up the chest, etc.
she didn’t need bruce to “save her” when she was trapped but, you know, it probably wasn’t in her best interest to leave the cell WHEN 500 ULTRONS WERE AROUND. by the time he left was when the avengers arrived. she wasn’t cowering in some corner waiting for a man to save her. in fact, she delivered the message to the guys via spy, which tony suggested and clint was already on.
i’m not saying there weren’t problems with her characterization but people are SO HAPPY to dislike joss whedon that they don’t look more in depth at the film and just wanna bitch because things weren’t 100% to their liking. had joss given us a proper bridge for bruce/natasha, then this would be different. and also, if it had been bruce pursuing her, we’d be having a whole different story. what? a woman can’t pursue a man? do you know how many variations of black widow are out there? she isn’t stone cold 100% of the time, people.
this is long but the complaints i am seeing, some are valid, but some it’s like… come on y’all, you’re better than this. just my two cents though.
