Bears of Boop, Bears of BETA!
Ticking off a milestone never felt so good. The buggy little creation that Bears of Boop was 2 weeks ago is no more.
I mean, sure, there’s still HEAPS of bugs but let’s not talk about those right now.
Instead...
today i worked on the main hub area, starting with tiles and one of the key parts of the game, the goblin tank. there is still a LOT to do for this area but hopefully this weekend i can take some time to finish more of it, including the tank. it’s use is a secret but i hope you enjoy this wip gif!
Dev Blog 2: What Next?
So I have a procedural generator to make map layouts for me and I have the basic player character mechanics. So what is next for Ascendant Path? The squares of the map each represent a room so I need to get a rough prototype for a room generator working.
Rooms will be divided into even segments. The idea is that each segment will pull a random layout from a selection of premade ones. These will be designed to always fit together regardless of which get randomly chosen.
Long term there will be special rooms that will become incorporated. These will be designed around things like boss battles, lore events, powerups and fast travel nodes.
COMPUTER GAMING AT ARU WEEK 2:
Subtitle: WHOOPS I FAILED TO POST ANYTHING IN WEEK 1 / TIME TO USE THIS BLOG FOR GAMEDEV STUFF AGAIN
So hey, kinda went haywire with letting just about anything on this blog. From now on, I’ll keep this blog strictly for gamedev content. Partly due to wanting to make this slightly more professional, partly because in the coming weeks I’ll be using certain posts for assessment at Uni. Which brings me to the main point of making this text post:
As part of a module I’m currently taking, I’m required over the course of 12 weeks to produce a video game from concept to finished playable demo. Included in the assessment are components requiring me to pitch the idea around week 5, and to blog about the experience of development over the course of weeks.
After some thought, I think I’m going to begin working on a 2D shooter game, similar to games such as Space Invaders, Gradius, Touhou and Ikaruga. I’ll be going with this in part due to the low level of complexity of implementing core mechanics, allowing me more time to experiment and learn from including additional features. As part of this, I will be researching and studying the design of these games and come week 3, hopefully having finalised the decision for any features I intend to build.
As well as this, I plan to post at various stages of development, perhaps with footage from the prototype I build, and write “producer emails” summarising what I accomplished in the past week and going on to outline plans for what I will accomplish next week.
Tldr; gonna make a game, watch this space
If anyone can provide their own suggestions as to games to research for this project, please feel free to reblog with them!
