Your reference number is your student number as far as I remember and should also be on your letter of admission, check there. Unless this is some other reference number you’re referring to? In which case I have no idea.

My test results are in but In the student ID column the ids start with letters and mine is just all numbers... am I missing something here ??

Unfortunately, anon, we have no way of knowing how your professor did it. You’re correct in that your student number is a nine-digit number (as printed on your YU-card). If you’re not sure what your grade is, my best advice would be to ask your prof. Other than that, I’m not aware of any changes to student numbers.

random question but just curious: are the beginning digits of our student numbers based on our admission year?

They do have a number system that coincides with the year that you first enrolled, but I’ve never confirmed this.

Where can I find out my York University Student Number?

Your YorkU application number becomes your student number once you get accepted. You can find it on your York card or in any confirmation emails/mail York sent you.

Is it bad if someone knows my student number? Can they do anything with it?

Not really, they can use it to sign you up for stuff without your permission but I think that’s about it. They could possibly use your information during exams/tests too, but professors always check photo ID during those times so that wouldn’t be an issue either. You should be okay, but practise caution and don’t give out your student number just to anybody unless there’s a valid reason.
