I have setup gnome-boxes on my local machine and have installed a Debian 9 virtual machine which seems to be vulnerable to the man in the middle attack using apt.
My plan is to write a script to capture an outgoing request (by apt) for a package, then collect the package from Debian, unpack and modify it by adding some code to install a modified kernel, re-package (also containing the modified kernel) and serve the package to the victim with new signatures. I am still investigating whether I can implement this before week 8, but my tutor Kris seemed very supportive and I am hoping I can!

I was really inspired by friday’s rootkit workshop by accenture and decided to investigate how I would present rootkits for the student presentation in week 10. I thought it would be interesting to exploit apt with a man in the middle attack as an idea. I then researched this and discovered that this was only patched in Janurary 2019 in the recent apt update (1.4.9) !?!??! Debian uses the apt versions 1.4.x, so I downloaded a version of debian 9 from December 2018 with apt 1.4.8 (vulnerable to the man in the middle attack) and am planning to experiment with it as a virtual machine. I spoke to Kris (my tutor) about possibly submitting this as my something awesome (so I only have to build either a cipher solver or a rootkit), and hopefully I will know by the Tutorial on Thursday if I will be able to complete this by week 8.
