The five tricks make it easy to learn multiplication. My favorite strategy that we learned is the array. You build it and it is fun to use. Also, Equal groups can be used to draw pictures when you are doing word problems. Having five ways to do multiplication makes it easier to check your answer. You can do a problem using equal groups and check it using an array. Multiplication is just repeated addition which is one of the five strategies you can use to solve problems.
I thought it would help to do an example.
Problem: If you read this blog 2 times a day for a week (7 days). How many times would you have read this blog?
Answer:
1. Repeated addition:
2. Array:
3. Mental Math
Since we already did the 2 times tables, I know that 2x7=14.
4. Equal Groups
5. Tape Diagram
No matter which way you do it, the answer is 14. Wasn't that easy and fun?
I auditioned for one-act, student written, student directed plays at my college. I was nervous, but I think I did pretty well because I got a lot of compliments on my performance as the Joker.
The weird part of the evening came during my third audition. I walk into the room and there's this really beautiful girl who did a fantastic job with her audition piece from "The Bell Jar". First thing out of her mouth is that she loved my piece, and that I'd chosen a part from her favorite comic book. So I was thinking that it should be a fun read... not so much. It was the play about the girl who lets the wrong man into her apartment. At first I was just worried that I'd have to try an English accent, but as I read the script it quickly became obvious that I was going to have to act very creepy; intentionally trying to frighten, and then shout threats at her as she lies on the floor sobbing. I think I did pretty well, having already worked as one psychopath that evening, but as soon as the adrenaline of the evening started to wear off, I got sick to my stomach thinking about it. I know it was acting, but it just still feels so awful. Rationally I know she was all smiles afterwards, and seemed to enjoy herself, but there's another part of me that's just sickened by how I acted. If I get cast in that it's going to be rough on me.
Still, all in all, quite an experience and I'm really hopeful about hearing back about casting. I should hear on Friday, then rehearsals start a week from Monday, on the 18th.
