[Student's work feature!] It's a rainy day, means the frogs will be out to play! ⛈️🐸 It's a cute chubby froggy she made for her daughter! Awww! As always, amazing work despite it being hard to see the stitches with this yarn. She has unlocked the technique "braille crochet"! 🤭😂 Froggy is made using Bella Baby Nippers yarn from @spotlightstores ! Slightly modified to her preferred size, but you can check out the original frog pattern by @littleloveeveryday ! Froggy sitting on a bunny chair is too cute. Student Spotlight: Toyotaka Mizuno, TRIAD Fellow
My name is Toyotaka Mizuno, but call me Taka! I’m a TRIAD fellow from Japan. The TRIAD fellowship is a study exchange program that lasts 1 year, during which I will study and work in 3 countries and spend 4 months in each of them. Those countries are U.S., U.K. and Japan. I just finished up my time here at Longwood Gardens on April 13 and graduated form the TRIAD program this week!
Before joining the TRIAD fellowship, I graduated from university and worked at my family nursery for 10 years.
What is your favorite plant?
My favorite plant is Rohdea japonica (pictured above). My family nursery has grown only this plant, Rohdea japonica, for 130 years. That is 4 generations of growing! There are over 1000 varieties. I even wrote a published book about the plant.
The book that I wrote about Rohdea japonica.
What is your favorite Garden?
I have two: Byodoin Hououdo 平等院鳳凰堂 in Kyoto, Japan and Bodnant Garden in Wales, UK. I also love the Kiseki no Hoshi Botanical museum in Awaji island, Japan. My favorite part at Longwood, though, is definitely the Main Fountain Garden.

Bodnant Garden
What is the best part of being a student?
The best part about being a student is having the time to see and experience real Longwood propagation in the greenhouse. It has made me re-think my experiences growing Rohdea japonica from a new perspective.
What is your background in horticulture (or whatever field you are in)?
I graduated from the University of Kyoto, where I studied genetics about symbiosis between plants and fungi at a laboratory. After that, I worked at my family nursery to grow, sell, educate, and write articles about Rohdea japonica for 10 years. I wanted to join the Triad Fellowship and come to Longwood because of its significant designs and innovation.
What do you do at work? Highlight your favorite project or what you do day-to-day.
I roatetd to different departments, growing plants in the greenhouses and then delivering them to be used in Longwood’s displays. One of my favorite projects was helping to create the Hydrangea orbs that hung in the Acacia Passage this spring.
Making Hydrangea orbs with one of the volunteers.
What are your future plans or what is your intended career path?
I would like to spread the wonderfulness of Rohdea japonica and Japanese horticulture to the world. I also want to travel and would like to know the culture of America and the world as well.
[Student's work feature!] This was too pretty not to share. A chonky chenille beige and pink bee with a pretty blue flower. All materials from @memo.arthouse Bee pattern modified from the one I gave during their workshop with a few extra hints from me 😋 Flower pattern she modified from one I gave her 😂 Everything is so so soooo nicely done! Talented student is talented (☆▽☆) more so than me as she managed to do the magic ring with chenille yarn because I didn't teach them the ch2 method 💪🏻😂 student powerrrr hahahaa Well done ma'am! I look forward to seeing more of your makes!! And such stunning photos I didn't even need to edit anything. 😏👍🏻📸 . . #crochet #crochetworkshop #studentfeature #yarnitbunny #sgcrafter #studentspotlight #learncrochet #chunkychenille #chenilleyarn #crochetbee #beeplushie #bumblebee #bees #handmade #yarnaddict #crochetaddict #crochetflower #yarnitbunnyteaches (at Singapore / Singapura / 新加坡 / சிங்கப்பூர்) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck5QJHgLD1k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Student Spotlight: Raydaliz Saset Cancel, Arborist Intern
Happily climbing a tree
Hola! I’m Raydaliz Saset, but I like to be called Saset or just Ray. I’m the arborist intern at Longwood Gardens. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and attended the University of Puerto Rico- Mayagüez campus where I got my bachelor’s degree in Horticulture.
What is your favorite plant?
This is probably one of the hardest questions to ask a plant lover! Two of my all-time favorite plants are plumeria and angel’s trumpets (brugmansia). Both plants remind me a lot of home. I like picking up plumeria flowers to enjoy their smell. Brugmansia are just magical; I like to think about them as bells since that’s what we call them in Spanish. I also love the “Flamboyán” tree (Delonix regia), which grows around Puerto Rico and blooms in the summer with spectacular red flowers. After coming to Longwod though, I fell in love with dahlias. Wow, all the different shapes, colors and sizes are truly amazing. Also, copper beeches (Fagus sylvatica) are majestic.
What is your favorite Garden? What is your favorite part of Longwood?
I love the whole Conservatory- literally all of it. Outdoors, I enjoy the Forest Walk, Peirce’s Park and Peirce’s Woods. Those areas are so peaceful.
What is the best part of being a student?
The best part of being a student is the ability to learn something new every day and share a space with new people from many different places. I love living on the Row! It is very fun especially when we get together and cook a bunch of delicious foods. Also, being able to walk in and go to the Gardens at any time is wonderful. This place is beautiful.
What is your background in horticulture (or whatever field you are in)?
My interest in plants and trees started when I was a kid. I remember always helping my grandmother in the garden. Eventually, I got my bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from the University of Puerto Rico where I mostly focused on soil sciences.
Why did you want to come to Longwood and what do you think helped you get the position?
Before coming here I didn’t have any experience in tree work and I was very clear about this in my application. I knew this would be a good opportunity for me to learn about arboriculture and eventually become an arborist. Being part of this program would enhance my knowledge in other areas, and give me the chance to meet new people as well as help me get a better idea of what I wanted to do in my future.
What do you do at work? Highlight your favorite project or what you do day-to-day.
Most of my day is spent outdoors, which is something I really enjoy even when it’s cold. The arboriculture team takes care of trees and make sure they don’t become a hazard for visitors and employees. I’ve had the chance of doing tree removals, pruning and tree risk assessments. Climbing a tree is the most exciting part of my day. Being up in a tree is bliss.
What are your future plans or what is your intended career path?
My main goal right now is to become a certified arborist. After finishing this internship, I want to work for a while as an arborist and travel, before pursuing a master’s degree in Forestry. I would like to focus on forest soils and how climate change affects the soils and forests in general. In the end, I want to go back to Puerto Rico, promote urban forestry in the island and improve the quality of our forests.

Student Spotlight: Xienxue Wang, International Horticultural Trainee
Hi! I am Xinxue Wang, an international horticultural intern at Longwood Gardens from September 2017 to May 2018. I come from Beijing, China, and moving here was my first time come to the USA. So exciting!
What is your favorite plant?
The first plant that jumped into my mind is Kaido crabapple tree (Malus ×micromalus Makino). It is a traditional ornamental and fruit tree in China. I love it because it has different appearances in different seasons. It has beautiful pink blossoms in spring, lovely edible fruit in late summer, and bright orange foliage in autumn. You can feel the change of time from looking at it. It is really difficult to just pick one favorite plant since I love so many plants. Crabapple blossom is just an example.

What is your favorite Garden?
Just like my favorite plant, it is difficult to decide which garden I love the most! One of my favorite gardens is Quyuan Fenghe Garden (曲院风荷) in Hangzhou. Quyuan Fenghe literally means ‘Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard,’ which perfectly describes the amazing view of the garden. There are over 200 varieties of lotus. It is so cozy to have a drink at the tea house beside the water, or have a walk along the bank in the summer evening.
An endless area of lotus in Quyuan Fenghe Garden
What is your favorite part of Longwood?
The Forest Walk in the Meadow Garden is my favorite. It is quiet and cool in the summer and autumn, and I really enjoy the feeling of being immersed in the woods.
What is the best part of being a student?
As an international intern, I rotate between different horticultural divisions, which allows me to have a variety of experiences in the horticultural field. So far, I have worked in Production, Natural Lands, Conservatory and Research. Soon, I will work in IPM, Plant Record and Outdoor Display. Furthermore, our supervisor and coordinator, Janet and Brian, are very helpful. I am interested in environmental education and wanted to do a small rotation in Education , so they helped me communicate with other departments and rework my schedule. Thanks to them, I am going to rotate to Youth and School Education division in March!
What is your background in horticulture (or whatever field you are in)?
I studied Landscape Gardening at Beijing Forestry University and worked in landscape architecture after graduation. Before coming to Longwood, I went to Australia where I studied Urban Horticulture. I became a big fan of sustainability when I was in Australia and obsessed with the ecosystem behind natural beauty.
Why did you want to come to Longwood and what do you think helped you get the position?
I wanted to come here because I wanted to get more experience in a different country. Working in a great garden of the world has been perfect for me! I experienced a very different life, learned new knowledge, built an international social network, and am even getting paid! I think my variety of prior experience helped me get the position.
What do you do at work? Highlight your favorite project or what you do day-to-day.
I switch departments every month, so my tasks are various. My favorite project has been tree planting in Natural Lands, which is very meaningful for the environment. I pride myself on trying to make the world a little bit better. I can always find something new in the nature, and my colleagues in Natural Lands were so knowledgeable that they could answer all my questions.
Planting more native trees for Mother Nature
What are your future plans or what is your intended career path?
I am going to go back to China with new ideas from Longwood Gardens! Before here, I did not have a very clear career path but now I know I would like to do environmental landscape design and environmental education.
