A retrospective look at a large-scale (38 x 48”) acrylic color study on canvas created around 2018.

Inspired by the hypnotic, rhythmic digital compositions of Andy Gilmore and the historic Orphism movement, with its emphasis on chromatic scales and visual movement, I wanted an excuse to use every tube of paint in a new set.

After building the wooden stretchers and hand-stretching the canvas, I used an oversized compass to scale up my original graphite sketch. I kept my studio notes and color mapping sheet from the process, detailing all the pigment ratios (lots of cadmium yellow, dioxazine purple, and cerulean blue mixes).

While abstract art often lacks a strict orientation, I always viewed this piece as a stylized landscape gradient: anchored by a green foundation at the base, ascending through sky blues and sunset violets, and culminating in a luminous yellow sun at the top crest.

A corner of my studio last week, definitely need a desk/workbench in here and a proper easel for bigger paintings. It’s been a while since I’ve been an easel painter but I think it’s time..
