1. What made you start writing for the first time?

Honestly, school. I wrote my first poem in first grade. It was about the color pink and where I saw it in my world. I started writing for fun when I was probably in middle school. I remember I once wrote a short story about a girl who had a little brother who couldn’t pronounce words very well, which made for some confusing situations.

2. If you could only write about the ocean, the forest, or the desert for the rest of your life, which one would you pick?

I was going to say the ocean, or the forest, because those are my favorite. But, I’d say I can enjoy the beauty of those places and not write about them. The desert is bold, scary, and gritty, I like writing about things like that. Beauty doesn’t always show up where you expect it. I like juxtapositioning beautiful words with unexpected settings.

3. Would you ever write a memoir?

I always wanted to, but as I’ve gotten older, it seems self-absorbed. My stories are important to me, and showcasing them in an unanonymous way seems daunting. Maybe one day.

4. Do you like writing by hand, or writing with a computer?

I make art, and there is something about utensil and paper that really resonates with me. Most of my poems have rough drafts etched out in this notebook I have, but sometimes if I have a quick idea I just type it quickly in a Google Doc from my phone to edit later.--This has proven to be really helpful, because sometimes I’m out and I have an idea for a line to something when my notebook isn’t readily available.

5. Would you rather be popular among many readers, or unpopular, but loved by critics?

I think I’d rather be popular among readers. I like when people connect with my work, and I try to make it relatable for this reason. I’d rather reach and connect with many than be loved by a few. I like the idea of someone out there reading my work and realizing they aren’t as alone as they originally thought. Helping people is very fulfilling for me.

6. Do you listen to music while you write? What is the best writing music?

I do sometimes, but I usually can’t listen to music with lyrics when I write. It throws me off. Hans Zimmer is my go-to lately. I also really enjoy listening to video game soundtracks sometimes.-- They can be very motivating.

7. Do people you’ve met find their way into your writing?

Absolutely. Most of what I write is based on what I’m feeling in a moment, especially what I’m feeling about a person or a situation with that person. Sometimes it goes off into an idea of a life someone could be living, or something about a friend, but sometimes I base things solely on something I’m personally going through.

3. What is something that David Bowie has introduced to you?

A lot of things but I think my favourite one would have to be Brecht. I only knew of Brecht by name before I watched Ba’al, and I had no idea what his style was like or anything, but the way he writes stories is almost perfectly aligned with the kinds of characters I find interesting. And his performance style is very very unique and interesting

6. What is your least favorite David Bowie persona/era?

Maybe controversially, the Duke. Some of the music was good but it’s not easy for me to consume media when I know the person behind it was suffering. Same kind of problem with a lot of music female popstars were making in the 2000s

8. Favorite Bowie song lyric?

This isn’t a lyric but I feel like it’s better in a way. Last year for my birthday some of my friends got me a dagger as a present, and engraved on the blade is the quote:

Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence OR Zoolander

27. What musician do you wish would’ve collaborated with David Bowie?

I would have loved if he’d had a chance to collab with a modern artist like Lorde or Hozier. I know he and Lorde were friends for a bit so that would have been a very interesting result

35. Favorite Bowie photograph? (pictures optional)

There’s one from 2015 I think at a Lazarus rehearsal where he’s wearing a white feather brooch. I like that one

39. Do you think Bowie is more underrated or overrated?

Both in different ways. Underrated by people who don’t know of him and overrated by those who do. People who don’t know of him just see him as another artist on a long list of musicians without realising the influence he’s had, and those who do know of him can treat him like he was some untouchable god. That feels invalidating in a way I can’t quite explain.....
