you've fallen for my trap card, ramblings not about the actual fic yet sorry - I'm going to talk about art technicalities at you now :]

I drew this up on a whim immediately after finishing the first chapter. Other than it being fanart, this year I want to think smarter when making elaborate pieces - this being the one of the first experiments on it.

sketches have always been my starting foundation I usually go through a few iterations gradually building off the rough thumbnail all the way to lineart. Here I'm establishing perspective and rhythm (movement), using background and props to better frame the emphasis (focal) rather than overwhelm the eye with unnecessary detail.

Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier manga panels were an inspiration for the lineart (reoccuring character. WHA changed my life)

I even started actually putting base colours instead of skipping to shading... BASE COLOURS. BASE COLOURS WITHOUT SHADING? Crazy world we live in. Above were me testing which colours worked best for the background and purpose. Ethubs look a little out of place atm - this changes in solid filters

Shading itself was a lot of back and forth in constant fumbles to maintain the rhythm instructed in the lineart, adding emphasis how values needed to carry the visual communication of this piece especially with a line heavy background because of the wheatfields. Everything uses either cel shading, filters, or gradients - I wanted to find a way to add complexity to my regular rendering style without needing to manually blend/paint (takes too long)

During this stage, Heikala's watercolour art was the study in crowd control (backgrounds with organic repetition)

Smaller misc details that couldn't fit anywhere in the previous pages. Overall while there are some things I still would change/redo, overall very pleased as a first (second) attempt ^_^

smth smth builder’s signature styles whatever - I love how instantly recognisable it is to be in a Bdubs build whilst not be jarring. This shot of both sides of the river is a wonderful example

The custom trees. Are so freaking tall in compare to the default, yet their presence doesn’t feel obstructive. You don’t feel ‘blocked out’ from the environment as the deliberate thinness of the trunks, what height the leaves on the pine start at give just enough breathe room to: look through, catch glimpses of the other side, and be invited to Go Through It.

He says it in his commentary, a lot of what he builds is heavily grounded in realism. This area is not meant to be the centre of attention, the purpose of these trees is to Immerse and act as transition as one leaves the rest of the minecraft world and into Bdubs’ ‘more natural’ one — where the trees are grey, and the water is clear.

I’m so fucking serious this random cut of the river is my favourite part in the entirety of this forest, I like how still it looks, I like how clear it is yet how dark it is not only to imply depth but that illusion that the river is reflecting its surroundings how you can even say the river is a dark green! Being able to come to these interpretations for something so simple to me perfectly captures what he wants in builds like these.

And it STILL doesnt feel out of place because he does something like THIS. The way the stream gets progressively more and more opaque until it meets the actual main river is genius work. It gives the impression the water in Bdubs’ place is fresh in compare to the saltier, deeper water of the larger river it transitions.

😭And a final thing, I know the white glass he used was done to suggest rushing water but I swearrr he has like a sixth sense in how to place them perfectly. (Forgive my shitty camera) From this distance if you squint you can see these dark and lighter shadows made by the trees, and by putting where the white spots are placed now highlights these small rays of sunshine poking through the leaves and shining on the river and I think that’s unintentionally the coolest thing.

Included are introductions, full reference sheets, and some of my designer's commentary when designing each oc from the writing to the looks.

[ NOTES UNDERCUT ]

Meta-wise these are ocs I RP as, and for possibly the first ever set of ocs I've got the pleasure in developing in such detail I find them all very dear to me as an artist and writer... It just felt right to introduce them in the most formal way possible.

This project was an attempt at making a proper reference sheet, complete with general information, turnarounds, and a focus on detail and patterns that would be difficult to see on the person alone (whether it's because of the angle or clothing folds etc). It's more of a streamlined (?) approach than my usual design sheets with a set format to better communicate to the viewer. It's also more whwhwwh denser than normal to talk about the journey, and intentionality that led to my final design choices.

In reflection... TBH I could have yapped for even more pages going into greater depth into the early design process. Inclusions of the rejected designs and colour tests, explanations to what was changed and justify on a more objective level what makes the final design successful to me... But whatever dude - maybe in a post of it's own.

Would you expect this to be the new format for all my reference sheets going forward? lmaooo probably not. Maybe occasionally.

GENUINE QUESTION

What is a good way to get the general public to be invested in your ocs that isn’t: a) huge wordblock of exposition or b) starting a webcomic.

Like uhhh . Good hooks - or starter questions to let the audience get to know about one’s OCs…. How do you attract or cultivate an audience like that?

What do the people want to know?

hehe honestly I rly just wanted to colour. I loved drawing the poses and the fluidity on the first pic sm and I’ve barely explored this newer colouring process of mine. I might decide to expand on some of those poses like the bottom left. Usagi (having no face) can get pretty expressive, I deffo could have gone more exaggerated which is all the more incentive to draw MORE of him!!

Iiii don’t think I ever uploaded the second page spread on here let alone that apple piece as its own thing which I might repost

I loveeee Usagi so much he is my favourite oc in the whole wide world Blue Marble, I wish I can tell more about him with yall one day ^_^
