Federico II was a patron of the arts and sciences. His court in Palermo became a state-of-the-art cultural centre, attended by poets, scientists and philosophers. In 1224 he founded the University of Naples, the first state university in Europe, with the aim of training officials loyal to the crown.
Federico II died in 1250 in Apulia.
