In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day I thought to bring forth the Irish-American writer and educator FRANK MCCOURT (1930-2009)from my archive. Raised mostly in Limerick, Ireland in dire conditions during and after the Great Depression, he saved up enough money to board a boat to New York City. He eventually became an English teacher at 4 or 5 different Manhattan and Brooklyn high schools, most notably at Stuyvesant High School in lower Manhattan. I was commissioned to take his portrait by Newsweek in 1997, the year he won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography for his memoir Angela’s Ashes. He wrote the book just after he retired from teaching high school and it brought him unexpected critical and financial success.
