It was a warm, summer afternoon when Harry and his four year old son, Xavier, left the house. The pair were off to the local movie theatre while the missus and his daughter had been gone all day running errands and getting everything ready for an upcoming baby shower they were planning for a friend.
“We’re gonna have lots of fun today, bug!” Harry explained happily as he buckled his son into his car seat in the back of Harry’s black Range Rover.
“Where’re we goin’, daddy?” Xavier questioned as he glanced at Harry in front of him. Harry chuckled in response, he had only told Xavier where they were headed about a hundred times.
“We’re going to the cinema, Xav,” Harry replied simply, “to see the new Cars movie, remember?” Harry finished tightening the strap across Xavier’s chest then shut the car door. He walked around the car and climbed in the drivers seat. Xavier was satisfied with this answer, until they started driving.
“Um, daddy,” Xavier spoke over the sounds of Fleetwood Mac that was playing in the car speakers.
“Yeah, bug?” Harry questioned as he glanced back at him in the rear view mirror.
“Is Lightning McQueen in this movie?” Xavier questioned curiously as he glanced out his window from his car seat. Harry chuckled at his question as he pulled up to an intersection on a red light.
“Yeah, I think he will be.” Harry replied, though he began to question this himself. He decided he would look up a summary of the movie online once they got to the cinema.
“Lightning McQueen is my favourite.” Xavier explained with a grin, as if this was new information to him. Harry couldn’t help but chuckle at Xavier’s ramblings.
“I know he is,” Harry replied with a smile as he glanced back at him again, “are yeh excited?”
“Mhmm!” Xavier replied as he kicked his feet excitedly against the passenger seat in front of him.
Harry pulled the car into the parking lot of the local theatre and his little boy squealed excitedly from behind him. He recognized the large building from the many other times Harry and the missus had taken him and his sister to see the latest Disney movies.
As Harry parked the car then hopped out to help Xavier out, Xavier’s little fingers pointed excitedly at all of the large movie posters on display outside. Harry loved seeing his little guy so excited over a trip to the cinema, and he loved spending as much time with his kids before he had to jet off to tour or do promotions in other countries. He really cherished the special little moments he got with his kids, and they always knew how much he loved to spend quality time with them.
“C’mon, Daddy!” Xavier giggled as he tugged on Harry’s hand, leading him towards the doors of the theatre. Harry chuckled as he ran along behind his eager four year old.
“Wait, let’s take a picture in front of the poster for mumma.” Harry insisted as he stopped in his tracks. Xavier frowned at this suggestion, wanting to head into the theatre as quickly as possible.
“Just one picture.” Harry promised as the two of them stood in front of the big, shiny Cars poster outside the theatre. Xavier eventually obliged to this request. He was accustomed to the constant photographs Harry and his mum would take of him on a daily basis, so this wasn’t anything new for him. Xavier gave him the cheesiest little smile he could manage, and Harry chuckled as he snapped the photo.
“Thank you, Xav!” Harry grinned as he shoved his phone into his back pocket, “now let’s go see Lightning McQueen.”
Harry had purchased their tickets online and had them on his phone, so the two boys bypassed the lineups and headed straight for the people scanning tickets. This was the ideal situation for someone with an excitable four year old who didn’t do well with waiting and lineups. Harry gave himself a couple of “Daddy points” for being prepared ahead of time (even though it was the missus’ idea to buy tickets online).
“M’going to see Cars!” Xavier explained happily to the young woman who was scanning their tickets.
“That’s so cool! I heard it’s very good.” She replied as she glanced down at Xavier by Harry’s feet.
Xavier was definitely a charming little lad. He took after his father in every way possible. From the light brown hair and green eyes, to the cheeky mannerisms he inherited. At only four years old, he was great at speaking with other people, mainly because of his fathers job, and how many people he had to interact with throughout his life.
“Enjoy your movie!” The friendly woman spoke after scanning their tickets. Harry nodded a thank you and Xavier squealed with excitement. Xavier waved at the woman and she smiled as she waved back.
“You’re so cute, Xav.” Harry grinned as he pulled his wallet out of his pocket. Xavier giggled sweetly as he glanced up at Harry. The two of them walked hand in hand towards the concession stands.
“Daddy, I smell popcorn!” Xavier exclaimed as he inhaled the warm scent of buttery popcorn that filled the cinema.
“Would yeh like some popcorn, bug?” Harry questioned as they subconsciously gravitated towards the delicious smell in front of them.
“Mhm, daddy,” Xavier nodded his little head in response, “I like popcorn.” Harry chuckled as the two of them stepped into the queue.
They stood in the queue for a few minutes before it was their turn to purchase their movie snacks. While they waited, Xavier began to wander towards one of the theatres by the concessions.
“Xavier,” Harry called at his curious little boy, “stay close, please.” Xavier glanced back at Harry with a glum expression on his face. He was incredibly curious and loved to explore, which Harry usually encouraged, just not at the cinema.
It wasn’t irrational to say Harry was always a little timid when he took the kids out. He could never be too careful when he was in public areas. Luckily, they were at their small, local movie theatre, where everyone knew each other and they knew not to bother Harry on his off-days.
“Daddy, look at the sweets.” Xavier’s mouth practically watered as he stood with Harry, glancing towards the chocolates and candies that were at his eye level.
To say Harry was a pushover was an understatement. He treated his kids like there was no tomorrow, buying them anything their heart desired, no matter if it was chocolates or the newest toys they were begging for. He felt very lucky to be in a position where he could provide for them, but he always got a scolding from the missus when he would return home with dozens of gifts for the kids. He made sure they weren’t spoiled brats though, teaching them to say thank you and give hugs of gratitude.
Of course Harry picked up a bar of Hershey’s chocolate as well as a big bag of popcorn for the two of them to share during the film. Xavier squealed excitedly when Harry let him carry the chocolate bar.
“C’mon then, let’s go get our seats.” Harry instructed Xavier with a grin on his face.
The two boys stepped into the dark movie theatre, and Harry let Xavier lead the way.
“This is our row, Xav,” Harry instructed as he stopped at the middle aisle, “take your seat.”
They had to step in front of a father-daughter duo who were sat on the aisle seats. Harry gave Xavier a little nudge towards their own pair of seats but Xavier decided to be shy and hid into Harrys legs.
“C’mon then,” Harry instructed Xavier, knowing the movie was about to start at any moment. Xavier blinked up at Harry.
“Wanna sit with you, daddy.” Xavier insisted as he wrapped his arm around Harry’s leg.
If there was one thing to know about Xavier, it was that he was very clingy and affectionate. Ever since he was a baby, he loved all types of loving, physical contact. He loves hugs and snuggles, and gave the best kisses ever. He just loved to be close to everyone around him, and it was the sweetest thing. Harry didn’t really mind though, and he didn’t have much of a choice seeing as the lights in the theatre began to dim.
Harry sighed, he couldn’t say no to the pouty little face that was glancing at him, so he quickly took his seat and let Xavier climb into his lap.
Xavier snuggled himself into Harry’s chest, as he grabbed a handful of popcorn from the bag in Harry’s hand. It wasn’t the most comfortable position to be in, but Harry loved having his little one close to him, so he couldn’t complain.
Throughout the movie, the two boys had a great time giggling at all the silly parts and ooh-ing and ahh-ing at all the beautifully animated racing scenes.
“Did yeh see that?” Harry would question with a giggle every time something exciting would happen.
“Mhm! Wow, daddy, look!” Xavier would reply as another scene unfolded on the large screen in front of them. They were having the best time ever.
But suddenly, Xavier had a problem.
“Daddy,” Xavier spoke in a whisper, halfway through the movie. He had been trying to chat with Harry all movie, but he tried his best to quiet him and direct his attention away from talking.
“Shh, watch the movie, bug.” Harry insisted quietly, not to disrupt anyone sitting around them.
“Daddy,” Xavier whined in response, “I ha’v’ta pee.” Harry was quite engrossed in the film and wasn’t too excited about having to get up and leave in the middle of it.
He totally should’ve seen this coming though. Rookie dad mistake to give his kid a big drink at the beginning of the movie.
“Alright, we have to be quiet,” Harry explained as he lifted Xavier off his lap, “go on.” He instructed Xavier. This earned a couple of groans from some kids sat behind them who couldn’t see past Harry’s large silhouette, but Harry was quick to mutter an apology to them.
Harry stood bouncing on his heels while he stood in the bathroom stall with Xavier. He realized they were probably missing an important part of the film, but that didn’t seem to matter to Xavier. He was just happy to have Harry all to himself that warm summers afternoon.
When the pair returned to their seats, Xavier immediately resumed his seat in Harry’s lap. It was nearing the end of the film, and Harry noticed Xavier was starting to nod off to sleep in his arms.
“Hey,” Harry whispered softly into Xavier’s little ear, “don’t fall asleep on me.” Xavier shook his head and giggled.
“M’not sleeping, daddy.” Xavier insisted as he blinked up at Harry above him.
“S’okay, bug, yeh had a late night.” Harry smiled as he pressed a kiss to Xavier’s little forehead. Xavier leaned his head against Harry’s shoulder and nuzzled into his warm chest. Harry knew he couldn’t keep his son from falling asleep, seeing as he was tired and the room was pitch black (besides the film), so he didn’t mind when he felt Xavier’s breathing become even and he heard little snores escaping his lips.
Unfortunately for Harry, the film ended about ten minutes after Xavier fell asleep. Harry regretted having to be the one to wake up his sleepy son, but he had to get him to the car, he was getting a bit too big to carry for long distances. Plus it was three in the afternoon and the missus would freak out if Harry returned home with a napping four year old.
“We goin’ home?” Xavier questioned as he rubbed his eyes.
“Mhm, we are. Do yeh wanna see mumma?” Harry questioned as he held Xavier’s hand in his. Xavier nodded silently and Harry grinned down at him.
They arrived home shortly after, and the missus and Harry’s daughter were already home.
“Mumma!” Xavier squealed excitedly when they entered their house.
“Hey, Xav! Hey, H!” The missus called from the kitchen, “how was the movie?” She was preparing a snack of crackers and peanut butter for herself and her daughter.
Xavier immediately kicked off his shoes and ran into the kitchen where his mum and sister were.
“We saw Lightning McQueen.” Xavier announced proudly.
“That’s so fun!” The missus replied with a smile, “and how did you enjoy it?” She questioned, directing her attention towards Harry.
“The movie was good! Until he had to use the bathroom, and then he fell asleep on me.” Harry chuckled as he stole a cracker from the plate on the kitchen island.
“Xav! You fell asleep?” She questioned with a chuckle. Xavier nodded shyly.
“N’aww, that’s okay. Did you have fun with daddy though?” She questioned as Xavier nuzzled his face into her leg.
“Mhm, I did.” Xavier replied with a grin.
“That’s all that matters then!” She replied as she glanced over at Harry, who had the goofiest grin on his face. He was really happy, and everything felt right in the world.
Being at home, safe and sound, with his three favourite people, Harry felt that was the perfect end to an amazing day.
