BASHA UHURU FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2016
The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival is a music event that took place at Constitutional Hill on the 25th of June 2016. Aimed at celebrating the art of being African, and the milestones South Africa has endured, which has rewarded us with a unique and just democratic constitution. I've been familiar with Basha Uhuru since 2014 when a creative Masterclass was offered to young creatives in Johannesburg; alongside a phenomenal exhibition by the Kalashnikovv Gallery. The gallery encompassed an oppressive history made beautiful, through using police helmets that were used in Apartheid South Africa; which were tranformed into wonderful art pieces. Fast-forward a few years later, an exciting element was introduced into their progressive program; which was concluded with an intense line up of African musicians and dj's by the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai, Blk Jks, Urban Village, Elo, Kenzhero, and DJ Doowap to name a few. The festival consisted of a DJ and artist stage, which was absolutely versatile and mind blowing. Imagine a mesh of dubstep, hip hop, old school soul and lounge music on one stage; and you get a crowd of turnt up youth looking really swaggie. Street style trends included box braids; colourful hair; sneakers; accessories such as hats and round framed sunglasses; retro vintage inspired looks; monochrome and pops of colour. The Youth of South Africa is a powerful force to be reckoned with. It's no wonder so many breakthrough innovations and business platforms are influenced by young individuals all over the world. South Africa is gradually thriving in it's newly realised creative economy. Platforms such as Basha Uhuru in association with the DAC, Kalashnikovv Gallery, COJ, TOMS, GFC and Constitutional Hill are progressive and necessary for its development. I certainly look forward to their 2017 showcase. By: Bonolo Moeng
