I love how Shard is drawn. xD He and Silver resonate a peak dork energy
Huh, I never thought that Larry being gone from the comics for a time could tie in to Rotor’s increasingly less-violent inventions.
Is that Reggie Graham’s fan art? He would go on to be a a colourist on the IDW Sonic comics!
I can’t believe the first time I’m seeing his art on this blog is of fan art he made of Bevalve. xD
Aw yeah, the Secret Freedom Fighters! I recall them being quite a big thing in the comics before they changed over. The Sonic Rivals references are also on the forefront, so let’s just take a gander at the first of the Secret Freedom arc!
There’s this moment where Silver sees a statue of his old mentor from his now-unreachable future time period. It would seem Silver never discovered his wise old tutor was once a leading Ixis cult member.
Also two things! (Again) 1. Ixis Vale is a reference to the exclamation Ixis Naugus yells out “Veil’s bones!” in #53. Man, talk about obscure references. Well done, Flynn!
And 2. Ixis Mogul’s Four Elite? Like the Destructix that he called his “Fearsome Foursome?” And that time he hypnotised three of the cast and then intended to make Sonic the last of his “new Fearsome Foursome” in #186? I guess the dude works in fours, huh?
The Secret Freedom Fighters are all assigned to locate Geoffrey St. John and put a tracker on him, all without being caught, and Elias and the rest having to go after Ixis Naugus himself.
There are two things that I already greatly appreciate. 1. Lyca and Leeta aren’t drawn with human woman anatomies and have fluffier faces, and, thus, fit more into the Sega Sonic style. And 2. this issue really starts to focus on the dorkiness and frank inexperience with the present-day. He gets more of this characterisation after the reboot and in the IDW comics, and I’m happy for it.
One half of this issue is the “Silver and Shard Blame Game”, as them and Larry search through the Ixis caves. Its a little bit slow, but the dialogue definitely makes up for it.
