Watching the dungeon meshi Dub and seeing Dub v Sub discourse again makes me so tired. I mean, it's mainly on Reddit from what I've seen. Shocker.

I really don't care if someone likes subs, its their own taste. But it just boils my blood to see these people say that the English voice actors suck. That ALL English voice actors suck. I agree that the one or two dubs or VAs they actually like are good, even great. But it's so upsetting to see people insult such amazing voice actors. You don't have to like them. You don't have to like dubs in general. But another thing that upsets me is that they make other people who like subs look so bad.

Anyway, can you tell I like SungWon Cho as a voice actor a lot.

So I started watching the dub of Moriarty the Patriot (first time through I was on subs).

I'm super interested in how impactful this will be to watching it. There is a certain IMPACT when William only says "Catch me if you can Mr. Holmes," in ENGLISH. Just the shock of suddenly understanding what he's saying perfectly is just so mmmmmm. And there's a lot of it! There's a lot of places in the sub where they just use an English word. I think this is probably done when possible to give the impression that all this is happening in England, and the dub doesn't need that. But will I get the same shivers when we come to that line on the train?

Second... Louis' name is literally pronounced differently.

It's Loo-ees in the sub. A long i sound. Loo-iss, short i in the dub. This spelling could be pronounced either way in English, so it's really interesting they chose to change that.

Obviously there's some changes in phrasing compared to the subtitles as well.

I can't comment on the choice of English accents at all, but that's also something that interests me. I'm not English so I just don't know the difference in sound (and if these differences would have change historically). Although the New York scene's use of a less heavy handed Brooklyn accent at the beginning was super funny to me because that Father is SO much more serious than Joey Wheeler but I CANNOT get him out of my head. I'm really curious if they will do anything with this though, considering how tied accent and class are (from my understanding) in England.

I feel like William would NEED to make sure that he speaks with as proper accent to seem as though he really IS the second Moriarty son, where as Louis might retain some of whatever accent they had before they were adopted. I can't imagine the posh v. BBC English v. cockney stuff only started in the last 100 years, and really this would need to be perfect from the get-go, to keep people from investigating the brothers further and discovering their crime.

My Japanese is good enough to pick up the mistakes while watching anime with Subs. But it isn't good enough to watch without Subs. 😒 Makes me regret not continuing with Japanese after 8th Grade. But I will still appreciate the work of those who write the subtitles. As that's something I'm not capable of.

Huh. It’s usually been used to refer to the main guy, like Shiro to Ichigo and Atem to Yugi.
