今回も、MeSH（Medical Subject Headings）に関する投稿です。 以前の投稿「シソーラスとデータベースの関係： 思考の先回り？」で、検索担当者がシソーラスの仕組みと索引ルールを学ぶことの大切さについて、他者理解の姿勢と絡めた説明を行いました。

シソーラスは、道具です。道具なのですから、やはり使い方を知らないと。 また、使い方を究めれば、自ずと知識と技術が向上します。

そして、いい道具は使い込めば使い込むほど使い勝手が良くなります。

今回からのシリーズは、『MeSH（Medical Subject Headings）』の索引方法の実際についてです。MeSHの基本構成については「マインドマップでMeSHを学ぶ」のシリーズでご紹介しました。ぜひセットで目を通してみてください。

今回も内容をマインドマップにまとめてみました。 索引作業やMeSHには縁がない・興味がない方でも、マインドマップを書きたい、もっと活用したいと思っている人には、なんらかのヒントにもなるかもしれませんので、どうぞお役立てくださいね。

以下、私による邦訳です。

主題索引とは

雑誌論文（もしくは、レターや解説記事のような文献など）を概観し、その主題内容を決定すること、そして統制語（controlled vocabulary）を使ってその内容を表すこと。

統制語を用いて索引を行う目的

同じ概念で異なる表現の言葉を除く（またはまとめる）ことで、文献検索を容易にすることである。

索引作業の理念

各文献の内容と形式が、完全かつ十分に表現されている。

最大限に詳述された用語を用いる。

索引担当者の仕事は、索引作業のみであり、解釈・評価・判断を加えてはならない。

【補足】 最後の一文、なんだかかっこいいなあと。

人と人との関係も、まずここからですよね。 最初から、フィルターをかけないこと。

…とはいえども、これがなかなかに難しい（笑） でもだからこそ。

それにしても。

アップしてから気付きましたが、誤字脱字の多いこと多いこと。 別のマインドマップでは「情報」が「情情」になっていたことがあります。 ハタ坊か、奇妙な冒険かと、自分で突っ込んじゃいました。 実はマインドマップって、結構性格が出るんですよね。 大雑把で結果オーライなのが、ばればれです。

でも、いいんです。自分用のメモなんだし。 間違いだって、間違ってるってわかることができれば、それでいいんです。 たぶん、なんでも一度は間違った方が学びが深くなりますよ。

Works about tango (the dance) are given the subject heading Tango (Dance), which may be subdivided geographically:

650 _0 ǂa Tango (Dance) ǂz Argentina.

Musical compositions for such dancing (not qualified by medium of performance) would be the form heading "Tangos", but there is no separate term for works about such compositions. We can form such a heading by adding --History and criticism:

650 _0 ǂa Tangos ǂx History and criticism.

as described in the Library of Congress Subject Heading Manual H1160.

Standards, definitions, terms and test codes for centrifugal axial and propeller fans. (OCLC #3697267)

In LCSH, nearby terms can give you a clue that you’ve found the wrong heading. For example, there is a subject heading Fans:

Fans (May Subd Geog)     [GT2150 (Manners and customs)]     [NK4870 (Art)]     BT Dress accessories     NT Fan painting           Flabella           Painted fans

So "Fans" refers to hand fans, not mechanical fans; for that, we're looking for a qualified term as found in this heading:

650 _0 ǂa Fans (Machinery) ǂx Standards.

Method of testing for rating commercial gas, electric, and oil service water heating equipment / American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (OCLC #954035445)

I am sometimes surprised by the structure of LCSH. I assigned this heading for this piece:

650 _0 ǂa Water heaters ǂx Standards.

but then noticed the neighboring heading "Water heaters, Gas" which is not a Narrower Term of "Water heaters"; both are narrower terms of "Hot-water supply". Since gas water heaters are a subject of the piece, but not included in my first subject heading, I added a second:

650 _0 ǂa Water heaters, Gas ǂx Standards.
