Declutterfication: I had my students do this one: the three shelves hosting their interactive language notebooks and language binders had become jumbled and unsightly. Now they are organized and lovely.

Sub plan hell. In order to be off for the next two days I had to prepare for two days with a substitute teacher. For those outside of education, planning for a sub is anywhere from two to three times more work than planning for my own teaching. Like most teachers, I have developed shortcuts to streamline the process: there is a folder with sub plan helps like student rosters and seating charts for each class. I have a sub plan template that I just need to adjust slightly for the planned sub days.

The rosters and seating charts change periodically, so I needed to make new copies of those for the sub. By the time I had done that and completed all the preparation (activities to support our long term research project for Thursday and Friday, and an online quiz for Friday) I was ready to make the explanations in my Sub Plan Lesson Template. It was well after six o’clock and I had been at school for over twelve hours…long day. I completed Thursday’s directions and proceeded to type the necessary changes for Friday. I THOUGHT I had saved the changes before I hit “Save As” to begin Friday’s plans. Nope. Here’s the killer: even though I had sent Thursday’s plans to the printer before I began Friday’s plans, I didn’t discover my faux pas until after seven o’clock. I went to the office to pick up my printing. The copiers had been turned off by our diligent custodial staff. When I turned on the printer to print my plans and make final copies I was greeted with a SYSTEM ERROR. I tried the recommended master shut down and restart, only to receive the error message a second time. I was so tired I wanted to cry.

I stumbled back to my classroom to resend my printing to the other printer. When I opened Thursday’s lesson plans, I found that I had not saved it before I commenced the Save As for Friday’s lessons. It was now well after seven o’clock and Thursday’s Lesson Redux was an abbreviated version of the original.  I know my students will be okay; they’re fourteen and resilient. I am okay, just really tired.
