I was writing up an RP character who was meant to be a manipulator, and I used the word “ulterior” to describe them. Then I stopped and thought.
Wait… ‘Ultear’?
The more I thought about it, the more something came to me.
I know her name is meant to be Ur’s Tear; a reference to her mother, her grief, her origin—but it also sounds uncannily close to “ulterior.” And honestly, that similarity feels too aligned with her character to be just coincidence.
Because being ulterior wasn’t just a temporary trait Ultear grew out of.
It was central to her identity.
From her earliest appearance, she was a master of double meanings: saying one thing, doing another. She manipulated people, played both sides, and cloaked her motives in mystery. But even in redemption, that part of her never went away. She didn’t suddenly become transparent or soft. She remained someone who worked in shadows; lying, twisting, misleading, only this time, for the sake of others.
She still said one thing and did another. She still held her cards close. Her self-sacrifice in the end wasn’t pure and clean, it was ulterior in every way. She deceived those around her to spare them pain. She lied so they wouldn’t stop her. She gave up her time, her life, and her future… all while pretending it didn’t matter.
It’s almost poetic: her name reflects both grief (Ur’s tear) and concealment (ulterior motives). Her entire arc is about how pain makes us guarded, how redemption isn’t always loud or righteous—it’s often messy, manipulative, and rooted in the same traits that once defined our worst selves.
Ultear’s story isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about redeeming the exact parts of herself that once caused harm.
It just shows the layers to her character.
I don’t know if anyone else caught this, but I found it really interesting, especially how the phonetics of her name reflect her journey so closely.
What are your thoughts on this? 💭
What is wrong with that child?
My problem with this line isn't that Ursa says it at all, or that she's concerned about Azula, but rather HOW she says it.
Notice, that Ursa doesn't even say " What is wrong with Azula, or THIS child", but " What is wrong with THAT child", instead.
I see this as an intentional hint left by the show's creators. It may be a small hint, but it's a hint nonetheless.
"The word 'this' is used to point to a singular person or object that is close to you. On the other hand, 'that' is used to point to a singular person or an object which is farther away from you."
It seems to me that calling your child "that child" is an expression of distance. It's almost as if Azula called her mother "that woman".
We have no evidence that Ursa didn't love Azula at all, but we also cannot say that Azula and Ursa had the same close relationship that Ursa had with Zuko.
More Subtle Foreshadowing...?
While Huey, Dewey, and Louie were happy to see their mother save them from the Beagle Boys, I noticed something on a repeat viewing. Louie may have been happy to see Della, but he wasn’t praising her at all like his other bros were. Granted, he did latch onto her arm when Launchpad was getting ready to crash the ship again, but still that subtle detail speaks volumes of how he acts around Della. Makes me strongly wonder how deep Louie’s feelings run when Timephoon premieres next Monday. This episode is really gonna hurt me isn’t it? Just how sad is Louie gonna get in these last several episodes...? Frank’s message about Louie’s complicated feelings with Della being a 10 outta 10 keeps looping in my head like crazy. I swear if he runs off with Goldie, my tears will be real. Like, besides Louie being distraught, imagine how heartbroken Della’s gonna react from Louie running off with someone he looks up to? She just got back from the Moon and now Della feels like she drove off her own kid, from having a falling out over her jealousy toward Goldie if this scenario occurs. That is gonna be soul crushing.
The Mirror Scene
Many different metas have been written about this scene, but I want to draw your attention to one specific detail.
This is an amazing art, but what caught my attention is Ursa placing hands on Azula's shoulders.
What's interesting, is that in the actual canon the hallucination of Ursa doesn't try to touch Azula, or hug her or give her any physical affection at all.
She's not even standing very close to Azula. Ursa is just standing there with her hands in her sleeves, which wasn't far from reality, judging by the family portrait.
It's incredibly curious to me that physical affection is not what Azula actually hallucinates in this scene.
Ok so I’ve got pics of the wip sketch I was coloring before my laptop froze/crashed(so glad I was doing it on an art website) and decided to show
The second image is reference for armor because I can’t do armor ideas to save my life- Color palette is all from Bad’s purgatory 2 skin, and the hood was inspired by an artist I saw on here as I was trying to think an idea of whether to do cleric/paladin or blacksmith/paladin them
I won’t be continuing coloring this until my laptop is fixed because I don’t have the confidence to do it by finger on phone
okay so i know this is strangely wholesome probably but you know how when you have crushes you notice every little thing? imagine someone doing that with you like..
so for me like when i do something write i sometimes hop up and smile and get really giddy and like what if someone noticed that every time?
like so my crush we were playing flag football and his hand twitched a little when he was waiting to grab someone’s flag and like those really subtle details are just??
also like i’m someone obsessed with like human behavior so like if i’m staring at you, sorry, i just am thinking about how awesome you are
like i also like snapping on beat of the song in my head or when i do something wrong so like these little details people like might love??
not sure what is about subtle details that i absolutely adore, but i do love them. perhaps it’s the simplicity of an action or just the innocent seconds when we aren’t focusing on whose watching for a split moment. them moments are well and truly the best.
