Lily hunkered close over the rusted desk that served as her workstation, jury-rigged soldering iron in one hand and a slightly singed circuit board in the other. The lamp on her desk, shaded with bits of scrap, lit the bottom of her face, lower lip held gently between her teeth. Cid knew, just by watching her for so long, she was replacing a fried transistor with the sort of delicacy he could only dream of having.Cid waited until she’d finished the delicate work and eased a little, leaning back in the shack’s darkness, before knocking gently with his knuckle on the door frame. She turned, a big smile growing across her face, and set the iron down on a piece of scrap steel.“Hey, Cid! I’ve almost got this working right again - it’s gonna be great! I’ve worked out the timing issues and I think this one’s gonna work! I guess you won’t have to be huntin’ for gas for much longer, huh?”Cid smiled and walked over, kneeling next to her chair. Even though she wasn’t in the shop, she still had a smudge of engine grease on her jaw - he reached up and wiped at it with his thumb. He should have known by now, for all the times he tried to clean her up, that he’d only succeed at smudging it around and making a bigger mess.“Hey, Sunshine,” he said, smiling gently back at her, “It’s time for me to get going. We need some supplies.”Lily put on a fake pout, blue eyes getting that sad look they always did when it was time for him to go, preempting the loneliness; “Will you bring me back some Nuka-Cola if you can?”
“Of course. And you know what, I got a tip that there’s some good salvage off the path in a few places. It’s all been picked over, but looks like these are a bit hidden. I’ll be taking my gear with me and see if I can’t bring you a present or two.” Cid brushed a bit of blonde hair out of her eyes.“Yeah, see if you can find that last part for the Countess, would you? Gonna be a week out there, right?” Lily’s smile brightened again and she leaned forward, wrapping her arms around Cid in a tight hug.“Yeah, Lil’,” Cid extracted himself from the embrace after a moment and stood, adjusting the strap of his rucksack on his shoulder, “I’ll be back in a week Hold down the fort, okay?”“Yeah, we’re on it!” she replied with a giggle, turning back to her circuit board and picking up her soldering iron once again, “I’ll have this thing up and running by the time you get back!”Cid turned and wandered from the darkened room and shook his head. If she could pull it off - and if anyone could, she was the one - it’d be a bit of a miracle. Then again, lugging a couple gallons of gasoline home every week was starting to take its toll. He looked forward to seeing it when he got home.
