A five-car consist of Bombardier R142 cars makes up an out-of-service train rumbling into Gun Hill Road on the express track, deadheading towards the 239th Street Yard further up north into the Wakefield section of the X. Personally from experience, it’s pretty rare to see a 5-car move along the WPR corridor if it’s not at night. So seeing this with the cotton candy sky, and part of Manhattan’s skyline in the back was probably the highlight of the summer. Passengers disembark and load onto a 96th Street/Second Avenue-bound (M) train, while awaiting clearance ahead of us at 96th Street since two trains are currently occupying the station, preventing us from pulling into our extended northbound terminus at this current time. The train of course is consisted of Alstom R160A-1 cars, the usual fleet seen on the (M) about 99% of the time, all formed of 8 cars, which is why the full consist stops short of the end of the platform. . As per usual, due to the (L) not having any access into Manhattan because of track replacement, (M) trains were extended up to 96th Street to provide service to customers at Myrtle-Wyckoff (where the L terminated all weekend), and 14th Street for the M14A/D+ SBS for service along 14th Street. With the General Order happening since 2018, who knows how long the (M) will see the UES on the weekends for. Posted @withregram • @xs1.photos Eerie Halls . The middle track of Whitehall Street on the (R/W) lines is usually just for terminating (W) trains during weekdays. This weekend however, that track was put to good use, as an Alstom R160A consist is seen gliding into the station in (E) service, preparing to end it’s rerouted trip here. After it gets cleaned up quickly, it’ll charge back up, and turn around for it’s journey back to Queens, which would sadly be all local. . Weekend maintenance along the 53rd Street Tubes and on the downtown side of Eighth Avenue saw no service heading downtown along the corridor, with (A/C) trains running along Sixth Avenue till Brooklyn and continuing their normal route. Unfortunately, the (E) couldn’t do that. A consist of Alstom R160A-1 cars plastered in a @marcjacobs advertisement-wrap is seen operating along the (M), bound for Metropolitan Avenue in the Middle Village section of Queens, where borough-wise, it ironically just came from about a few stops ago. It’ll continue to transverse down Sixth Avenue completely local, even towards Bryant Park, which is it’s next stop. . Ad-wrapped trains aren’t usually a common thing around New York City anymore. Back then, it was a pretty rare and exciting thing to see. From a Target-wrapped R142A, to an NBA-Finals wrapped R142, and hell even the Subway Library wrapped R160 consist was enough to catch attention. Recently, the MTA wrapped this set in a Marc-Jacobs advertisement. You can’t make it up, a consist of Alstom R160A-1 cars is seen pulling out of the Marcy Avenue Station in (J) service, having just started it’s trip at the aforementioned stop and now heading back into Manhattan once again, with Essex Street being it’s first stop. Down below, 2019 New Flyer XD40 #7587 runs below the departing westbound train, having finished it’s shuttle run from Broadway Junction, and concluding it here at Marcy Avenue as well, allowing passengers to transfer for subway service directly upstairs. Personally, I’d feel bad for anyone who missed that train, cuz that 20 minute gap goes bonkers… . Weekend track maintenance along the BMT Jamaica Line saw (J) service being split into two sections: The first being between Jamaica Center & Broadway Junction, and the second being between Marcy Avenue & Broad Street, with (M) service being dumped out the window and suspended entirely. A now out-of-service consist of Kawasaki R142As coasts down the express track of the IRT Jerome Avenue Line, after ending it’s Uptown-(4) run to Burnside Avenue, having ran express from 167th Street to there, and then terminating. Now it continues further uptown on the express track towards Jerome/Concourse Yard, where they’ll store it till it’s needed again for service, presumably either in the morning or on Monday when rush hour starts. The sun continues to set over the scene here in the University Heights section of the Bronx, while Manhattan’s skyline stands tall in the background behind the deadheading train. . For those who were probably curious and would ask, “why did this (4) train terminate at Burnside instead of going all the way?” Well, it’s because of the fact that Woodlawn as a terminal itself can’t physically handle that many trains coming in and out, so they sent some (4) trips on an express battery run from 167th Street to Burnside Avenue. After that, some trains have a straight deadhead for Jerome Yard, and some even just get send back downtown from there. When I typed out the title for this post, I really thought it would be the semi-finale for this little series since these were wrapping up their testing phases. But with recent news on the issues I’ve heard they had, guess we not done yet 😅. . The brand new 5-car consist of Kawasaki R211As sits on one of the lines at Coney Island Yard, awaiting to return to Pitkin Yard after running several tests and trials over the past few days along the lines that spew out of the aforementioned yard. Speaking of that, wondering how I was able to get this shot specifically? Easy: we’re onboard a Coney Island-bound (N), consisting of Pullman-Standard R46 cars, which ironically is what the R211s are meant to replace (about the umpteenth time I’ve emphasized that fact.) If you notice it well enough, the taillight of an R68 can be seen behind the new-tech train. . With the recent issues that I’ve heard this train had while in the testing phase as I mentioned before, as well as the planned date for these to enter revenue service drawing nearer and nearer, the future for these trains are uncertain from my knowledge.
