Is Your Succulent an Echeveria or a Graptopetalum? Here's How to Tell
Succulent lovers, we've all been there. You have a beautiful rosette, but is it an Echeveria or a Graptopetalum? They're closely related and sometimes even hybridize (that's a Graptoveria!), but here's a quick cheat sheet.
Look at the leaf tips: Echeveria leaves are often plumper and rounder at the tips. Graptopetalum leaves tend to be more pointed or triangular.
Check the "farina": That's the lovely powdery coating. Echeverias often have a thicker, more opaque coating, while Graptopetalum's can be thinner, sometimes giving them a translucent, ghostly look (hence the "Ghost Plant" nickname).
Feel the texture: Gently (very gently!) feel a leaf. Echeveria leaves are generally smoother. Graptopetalum leaves can feel slightly grittier or have a different texture.
Getting it right matters for perfect care, especially with light needs. Still unsure? Don't stress your plant with pokes and prods. Just use a plant identifier app. A clear top-down photo is usually all it takes to settle the Echeveria vs. Graptopetalum debate for good.
