“I am not scared.”

“You’re scared!”

Katherine whipped her head around to glare at Sarah, who was barely suppressing laughter. “When I was eighteen I spat in Joseph Pulitzer’s face and told him he could stick his head up his ass. I’m not scared of a moving picture.”

Sarah patted Katherine’s hand as the theater went dark. “We were livin’ together the first time you read Frankenstein,” Sarah said affectionately. “You were scared then too.”

“Firstly, that was eight years ago, I’m twenty seven now. Secondly-”

“Shh, the picture’s startin’!” Sarah said, a broad grin on her face. Katherine’s stubbornness wavered as the screen brightened and the pianist in the corner began to play.

As the picture played, Katherine kept startling so badly she nearly fell out of her seat. It wasn’t long before Sarah finally took pity on her girlfriend and took her hand, squeezing it reassuringly.

“Who’s scared now?” Katherine muttered.

“Still you, doll. Love you.”

The moving picture didn’t seem quite so scary after that.

while we're on the subject (sorta), i think the inter-group relations between the newsies is absolutely fascinating. i could watch an entire other play just about the way the groups work together/against each other. jack doesn't have very many boys, maybe 20 that we see. but does he have power over more?? he seems to own his region but how big is his region?? does he answer to anyone?? how did spot conlon (who can't be older than 14) get to become the boy king of brooklyn?? so many questions.

like these street kid politics are so interesting bc u can actually see stuff like that irl, now, little kids absolutely build up little hierarchies and games like that among themselves, and honestly i just think about this stuff as being on a bigger scale if that makes sense? we get a sense of it working differently in different areas (jack isn’t called king although he clearly leads lower manhattan, whereas spot is notoriously king of brooklyn) but i think what it boils down to is one charismatic or capable person is well known among street kids for some reason or another (like, for example, jack’s legendary escape from the refuge) and the kids just kind of automatically think, yeah, this is someone i can look up to.

but the sheer SCOPE is so crazy to me because as far as we know jack runs lower manhattan, which has to be a few hundred poor homeless kids, and spot is supposed to run all of brooklyn, which has to be upward of a thousand. in real life THOUSANDS of kids participated in the newsies strike, and it was led primarily by ONE child, kid blink. i have no idea what kind of influence that each “king” or “queen” would have to exert to wield real power, but i assume it’s a combination of practicality and little kid hero worship. like jack clearly watches out and cares for those kids- he went to jail for stealing for them, he went on strike for them, he faced down his worst fears for them- and thats just one example. knowing that, along with the way little kids like les have this hero worship for cool tall handsome jack, i think thats how these little unofficial politics come to be.

i sort of touched on this exact topic in my fic actually i didn’t get so explicit about it but yeah. loves it
