Headcanon time:
Freed is the one who has more experience in actual relationships with other people (in general, not only romantic), he knows how to talk to people and form bonds. He knows how to smooth talk, how to charm. He knows how to impress.
While Laxus on the other hand, is extremely awkward with people, it's hard for him to get to know others (I'm pretty sure it's actually canon btw). One-night stands acceptable (in my head - before Freed of course; mainly because those mentions in manga of Laxus and his...women he mentioned just once, but I don’t think there ever were any) but nothing which includes extensive relations.
