My/Our Country Do-ho Suh, 2014
This is a bronze map of Korea made of individual miniature figures forged together to give the country and thus the culture shape.
I like the interplay between the ideas of anonymity, individual identity, and collective belonging, which is something that seems to be an especially pertinent struggle in contemporary Korea as the communal oriented social structure of the past has been giving way steadily to a more individualized model akin to that of the West. Being an outsider in a culture (albeit a relatively privileged one) for an extended has driven my thoughts to focus on individuality and collectivity within the sphere of national identity, so perhaps this work is really speaking to my present experience in a more visceral way than most.
