These #selfies were taken almost exactly six years apart. The left was taken in 2014, the right, last night. I was mildly pleased when I scrolled through Facebook Memories and saw this. Of course, it was bittersweet. I was still in Austin, getting ready to go to a concert. My late husband was still very much alive. We had certainly already been through our share of trauma and drama, and sadly there would be more to come. But...#sixyearslater I don't look half bad. I actually look somewhat healthier. I don't know about happier, because what is happiness? Dear Bret ~ It's difficult to be grateful when all I really want is to be able to turn back time and see if there are any changes that could be made to alter this outcome. But I know that I should be focusing on the fact that I even knew you at all. That you gave me the most wonderful daughter. That we had the absolute time of our lives on many different occasions. That we witnessed and experienced miracles. I'm glad I got to be with you while you supernovaed and burned bright before you burned out entirely, crumbling back into the stardust that you were before time began. Before you and me. Before this complicated life. And I'm even more thankful that we were written in those same stars, even though this is a pain I'd never want to wish on anyone or experience again. The bright side to that, if you will, is that we were written in the stars once. And we are still written in them. I pray that this time spent in the cosmos, with nothing but your life lessons and memories to ponder upon, will give you the clarity that this life couldn't. And maybe next time, you won't have to be a star that burned too bright, too fast. You can be the whole galaxy. Feeling this so much lately. Every thing is falling apart. Seventeen months later, after many lows and even some pretty good highs. It's hitting me like a ton of spiked bricks...as my house continues to fall apart...money is tight as fuck...humanity continues to unravel. You get to miss out on all of it because you chose to just check the fuck out one February afternoon. I love you. And miss you. But I wish I could kick your ass to oblivion, sometimes. Last long run done today and one week from the starting line of a marathon for which I am seriously underprepared. I have missed *a lot* of training plan workouts and runs during these past 16 weeks. Less so in these last six weeks or so, but still quite a few. A small part of me, the more sane and reasonable part, is considering dropping down to that half yet. I can decide at packet pickup the day before. But the rest of me doesn't want to take the easy way out. The rest of me wants to make this a tribute, for Keith, for suicide awareness in general, for the 22 plus 1 who tragically end their silent suffering everyday, and for those of us who are left behind to make sense of it. I am not sure I will finish sans injury. Heck I am not even 100% sure I will finish. Having a whole in my heart has made every training run so much harder to even start and more exhausting to finish. I signed up for this race at the beginning of the year with a goal to BQ my time. Today, last pre-race long run done, I can only hope to finish and meet or perhaps slightly best my barely sub-5 hour time from 10 years ago. How the course of life before me can change so much in just a decade is beyond my ability to comprehend or explain.
