If you had to pinpoint one place where Suits lost its charm which would it be?
sorry, nony, I haven’t been ignoring this, but for weeks I was hoping something would pop into my mind, only to keep circling back to....“I’d have to rewatch the later seasons in order to answer this question,” and the thought filled me with a cross between ennui and “meh.”
so instead I consulted wiki episode summaries to jog my memory. the truth is, it was a long slow decline, and by the time I was watching with a soundtrack of “ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh” I’d been enjoying it less and less for a long time.
the nail in the coffin though was 6b, though (more recent than you might’ve guessed?). there were still bits and pieces I enjoyed (even if I wasn’t amazeballs excited) up until Mike got out of prison. like...the trial was interesting, Harvey having panic attacks and being in therapy was interesting, the firm falling apart was interesting, the dilemmas Mike and Harvey faced as a result of Mike’s incarceration were interesting. I wasn’t jumping up and down anymore but there was still something worth watching, to me.
after he got out of prison, there just...wasn’t much to give a fuck about. like...am I supposed to care that they manipulated him into the Bar? am I supposed to be excited about that? theoretically the legal clinic could have added something interesting but it just...didn’t, maybe because of the focus on getting him licensed. the *only* interesting thing about 6B was fiiiiiinally meeting Harvey’s mom. it was ALMOST too late, like...they waited SO FUCKING LONG and probably should’ve wrapped it into the therapy arc instead of an entire fucking year later, but I did enjoy the way it played out: his mother made her mistakes, but Harvey had to accept that *he* was ultimately the one that wrecked his family, not her. *that* was satisfying.
look, I love my characters, but just because I love them doesn’t mean I want to see them be Always Right and Consequence Free. I’m not sure what should’ve happened to Mike after prison. I was fine with them getting him out. I don’t even necessarily disagree with them writing Harvey as WANTING to get Mike into the Bar, because it’s consistent with the relationship they’d built for them. Harvey wants to keep Mike close, he wants to remain a Team, he wants Mike to have every opportunity he can steal for him. That’s fine - that’s love. it’s stupid love, but that happens, especially when the person in love is an egocentric manchild. that doesn’t mean there should’ve been PAYOFF from it. I mean, I didn’t want Mike in perpetual torment of having ruined his life, but giving him legitimacy just seemed...ugh, it’s just terrible writing, that’s the truth. TERRIBLE WRITING. no one has learned anything, apparently? and it wasn’t an interesting journey to GET to the terrible punchline.
and that’s why I haven’t even touched s7 (yet). every time I try, I get halfway through the “previously on Suits” and end up hitting “stop” in a rage blackout.
I think that when Donna said that the bags on the floor meant that Harvey was ready to forgive his mother she was wrong: the fact that he was willing to go to see her meant that he wanted to forgive her, not that he was ready to (“I’m so angry. I don’t want to be angry anymore, but I don’t know how to stop.”)
Harvey was ready to actually move towards forgiveness only when Lily finally acknowledged that he had a right to be angry and that he wasn’t just being childish.
Have you ever seen the Suits webisode where Harvey quotes Cher's speech from Clueless? You should youtube it immediately if you haven't lol
this came in while I was in Kenya and I didn’t see it when I got back, somehow - so sorry!
but yes! it’s so classic, and so delightful. also I got a kick out of it because I once wrote Harvey as a Clueless fan and then it turned out he IS. I never, in my wildest dreams though, expected him full-on performing a Cher soliloquy, complete with hair toss. amazing.
lol ugh, the Harvey Specter tag is a fucking MINEFIELD of darvey right now
*tiptoes through that shit*
ok that was actually everything I kind of wanted from Harvey’s family drama being dragged out into the open, and Mike’s storyline was pretty great too
I forgot to mention that I DID finish Suits' last season this week btw. it was... largely forgettable, which is something I never thought I'd say about this show. If gave some of my faves good moments here and there (Louis, Samantha, Katrina, Alex, even Robert as little as he appeared). but it was all disconnected and unmoored.
I blame it on the fact that that Harvey was a pod person all thought the season. it was like they'd replaced him with Donna's fantasy bimbo, parroting every line she wanted him to say without conviction. if s1-8 Harvey could see him... the actor didn't seem to be even putting an effort in their scenes which made it so much worse smh.
well, I'm done. now I'll just imagine they'll divorce soon enough xD. Litt Wheeler Williams Bennett is going strong and that's what matters most to me (besides the fact that nothing -that icr- in the season contradicts my headcanon that Rachel is refusing to pick Donna's calls after what happened with Robert lol).
Harvey Specter :(
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life
He used to be in my top 5 faves in this show before....you know :((
hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang
hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff
We agreed with Snake Lion.
best quality: He never gives up. Except in s9 :((
worst quality: His ending. What a sham
ship them with: Scottie and only her canon-wise. As crackships I could ship him with Katrina, Alex, Samantha, Rachel, Jessica
brotp them with: Sam, Rachel, Jessica, Katrina, Alex, Luis
needs to stay away from: DONNA!
misc. thoughts: why, ehy did the writers did THAT to him?! He wasn't exactly my #1, but it ruined the whole show for me.
