I've been seeing a few takes about Subaru healing from Seishirou and whether he'd even want to, CLAMP's thesis on how happiness is different for everyone, etc. The problem is whenever these debates happen it drives me a little crazy, because, like...
You remember that meeting Seishirou was arguably the best case scenario, right?
I swear, whenever this issue comes up people forget that Hokuto's entire motivation for getting Subaru and Seishirou together, despite knowing that it'd probably end badly, and still wanting them to be together in the end, is that Subaru was an empty shell of a human being who would either spend his life being that empty shell or wind up the same way as his ghosts. As much as readers like to fantasise, there was no reality where Subaru was going to end up as a zookeeper with a sweet and caring boyfriend while occasionally going off to cleanse some spirits. He was already crumbling under the weight of being the clan head, physically and mentally driving himself to collapse because of the toll of his job, and doing things like letting a woman stab him to make herself feel better. Seishirou has to jump in to save Subaru's life at several points because Subaru would rather die than hurt someone. And sooner than later, he probably would have.
Did Seishirou screw up a perfectly good onmyouji? Obviously. But Subaru already had the anxiety (and several other severe mental illnesses). It's a very important part of his (an arguably an even more important part of Hokuto's) character that Subaru was not doing well. Yes, he's sweet, and lovely, and colourful, but he wasn't living. Unfortunately, with Seishirou, he was.
That's why it's a tragedy.

SeiSub Tanabata Fest 2026: Prompts and FAQ

Welcome to SeiSub Tanabata Fest! Everyone is allowed to participate. This is a ship event for CLAMP's Sakurazuka Seishirou and Sumeragi Subaru. Pick whichever version of work you feel like creating for with SeiSub (Tokyo Babylon, X/1999, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, etc.).
This fest is in celebration of the coming Tanabata (July 7th in Japan). Each day features prompts relating to traditions or imagery associated with Tanabata. Tanabata marks the halfway point (138 days) in between Seishirou’s birthday (November 22nd) and Subaru’s birthday (February 19th). This indicates their relationship as star-crossed lovers, which makes their relationship on Tanabata all the more intriguing.

While I'm on a CLAMP high, here's a question for X/Tokyo Babylon fans: What do you think Seishirou would have done, if he had known about Subaru's true Wish before Rainbow Bridge? Would he have still activated Hokuto's spell, because he was a selfish bastard who had decided he was Destined to die and wanted it to mark Subaru/make it so that Subaru would never escape his influence? That he didn't think he would live past the Promised Day, so he thought this was the way he wanted to go out? Or would he have decided to live, knowing that Subaru still wanted to be with him, that his actual Wish wasn't to kill Seishirou, but to mean something to him/be killed by him just to hold his attention even for a moment? Even if they both died by the time of the Promised Day, he genuinely loved Subaru (I'm not taking any arguments otherwise, the structure of that half-hid sentence absolutely means that), would he have changed his mind and walked away with Subaru?
For Subaru's birthday!
