This is all inspired by the amazing royal trio fic "Robin's Merry Wingman" by @readyas

Post-canon Shuakesumi fic but it's a dumb rom com (or Shakespearen comedy, depending on how you look at it)

Akechi is in love with Ren. Sumire is also in love with Ren. Akechi and Sumire are best friends.

Ok, 'best' is an exaggeration, they've only been friends for 3 months. But Sumire spent the last year only spending time with her fellow gymnasts or Kasumi's friends, all of whom knew the truth about her and only stayed by her side out of pity (at first they did, until they couldn't stand it anymore). This was the first time in a while where someone saw her as HER and chose to stick around. Akechi hadn't had a normal conversation with a teen like him in half a decade. No one'd called him by his first name until Sumi's quiet "Goro-san" just a few days ago. Whatever they have is weird, but they like it, and it's what they need right now.

So, of course they realize the other has feelings for Ren. It's pretty obvious. Sumire can't stop falling over herself and blushing around him and Ren is the only other person Akechi goes out of his way to talk to. So they notice, quickly.

But the thing is, they're not jealous.

They're friends. They want to be supportive. Besides, they both think they themselves would be a TERRIBLE partner for Ren.

Akechi obviously thinks Sumire would be better; Ren and Sumi are like something out of a fairy tale. The kind princess, the noble thief who saved her, and the endless love and devotion they would give to each other for the rest of time. Akechi isn't supposed to be in that narrative. He's just a murderer, he hurts anyone he loves. He's the black knight the noble thief should have slain.

But Sumire thinks Akechi and Ren are MADE for each other. They're like something out of an old myth. Two souls bound by fate, a forbidden love that could never be. The hero offered a false paradise for his tragic lover, the hero rightfully denying it, only to really bring his soulmate back from the underworld just by the goodness of his choice. Sumire shouldn't be near a tale so pretty. She isn't important, she doesn't know Ren like Akechi knows him. She's just someone Ren pities.

Akechi adamantly disagrees with that sentiment. Sumire can only disagree with his.

They talk in circles about it for days, and every loop around the argument circle just makes them more convinced that they're right even though the other can't see it, and that just makes them more stubborn (they have that in common, Sumire realized. Once she actually felt safe being stubborn she was quite good at it).

So, what do they do?

Well...princesses usually have an animal sidekick, don't they? And don't soulmate stories always need a best friend, for the sake of the plot?

Yeah. They both think that's right.

Naturally, they both decide to set the other up with Ren. At the same time. And against the other's wishes, but for their sake. Antagonistic wingmanning.

So they both go to Leblanc at the same time to test it out, get their friend the man they KNOW they deserve, and then go home so they can cry about it a little. Yeah, they don't think they deserve Ren, but they're still gonna be sad when he's taken forever. Just a little. Whatever, they won't tell anyone about it. This plan is good. All they have to do is be a great wingman.

They're both terrible wingmen.

Akechi doesn't know the first thing about dating so he's going off of fairy tales and bad rom coms he pirated last night. Sumire's only exposures to romance are J-dramas and the smutty fics Futaba sends her, so that's all she has to go off of.

Sumire intentionally spills her coffee on Akechi's shirt so he'll have to take it off and show Ren his chest. This just gives him 3rd degree burns (Sumi immediately tears off his shirt to tend to his wounds. Ren stares).

Akechi trips Ren and Sumi so they'll fall on top of each other in a romantic fashion. He trips Sumi the wrong way and she falls and slams her head against the Leblanc counter instead (Akechi immediately pulls her up to make sure she's ok, tenderly touching her forehead and grabbing the 1st aid kit. Ren just watches).

When all else fails, they just start pointing out how attractive, and smart, and amazingly talented the other is, and how anyone who gets to date them would be so, so very lucky (and they really hope Ren gets their hints by now).

Ren's eyes widen with horror.

He's become convinced that Sumire and Akechi are in love with each other.

It just snowballs from there
