Teaching Girls Web Technology

  As part of Mozilla's Summer Code Party, the ladies at HER Ideas in Motion got together to train other mentors to go out and teach girls web technology.

HER Ideas in Motion holds workshops throughout the year on web development and filmmaking. Women professionals role model their careers to inspire the next generation of female techies.

Hive NYC Street Squad - Teen Webmakers Activate!

In just a few weeks, Hive NYC's three high-school summer interns--Zainab, Wilson and Eddie, aka the Hive NYC Street Squad--went from playing with Webmaker projects to creating their own Thimble projects and sharing their newfound skills with their peers at six Summer Code Party events!

From kitchen table-type skillshares with other teens at the Rubin Museum of Art, MOUSE and Brooklyn Public Library, to an event with over 150 middle schools students at the Bronx YMCA (and even an outdoor flea market!), the Hive NYC Street Squad helped over 400 people learn how to remix and build the web using X-Ray Goggles and Thimble. Zainab and Wilson also created their own Thimble projects, which were inspired by the documentary, "Bully," and lead people through the process of building a webpage about a topic or issue they're passionate about.

'A reading list for Webmakers', Mark Surman

People often ask: Where did Mozilla Webmaker come from? And, how does it fit into the big picture of Mozilla’s mission? There are loads of materials online that answer these questions. I figured I should create a ‘reading’ list for would be web makers that pulls together some of the main threads. Here it is.

1. The Story of Mozilla

This video is a great place to start. In 3 minutes, you get primer on how Mozilla used Firefox to keep the web alive and on where we are headed next with mobile and web literacy. The main take away: Mozilla is a global community of people creates compelling products and experiences that build openness into the internet. This is an important foundational idea to get. It’s how Mozilla thinks about itself.

Hi! We want to help you get those ideas out there!We have a lot of great projects on Webmaker.org that show you how code works, and how to use it as you complete simple tasks. We would suggest trying:Learn HTML Fast by making your own webpage.orRemix your favorite webpage, where you can use the XRay Goggles to peek under the hood of your favorite pages and see how they are constructed.Those are great options if you are a self starter!If you'd rather learn with others, you can check out our Events section and look for others in your community who want to learn along with you - or organize your own group and use the handy guides to plan with.
