We’re two weeks away from the summer solstice, which has me dreaming of fireside gatherings, grilled sausages and beer, tiny cold shots of akvavit, and strawberry cake in the garden. Akvavit is a classic swedish schnapps from the south that is quite easy to make yourself, and goes delightfully with the midsummar smörgåsbord! 2 tablespoons of aniseed 1 tbsp fennel seed 1/2 tablespoon of caraway seed add all, in a large glass jar— Add 1/2 cup of brännvin (vodka!) to cover. Seal and shake once a day for up to a week- if you start it on June 10, it will be ready and chilled for midsummer! Strain and bottle, diluting the essence as needed to taste. Store in the freezer, best drunk ice cold. Skål! Do you celebrate the summer solstice? Did you know milwaukee is one of the funnest cities to travel by kayak? It’s incredibly easy to do, with no lack of docks, put-ins and rentals all over the city proper. I had the pure delight of spending Memorial Day paddling the river downtown with friends, docking at various food and drink establishments along the way to partake in fried fish, Mai Tai’s and Margaritas to our heart’s content. In fact, a favorite place to visit this summer for a drink on the water is @boonemilwaukee , who host an entire fleet of rentable kayaks in their parking lot alongside a bomb collection of curated food trucks.
