One day when I was 17 and at @westmontcollege #summerscholars, this cute girl who I had a huge crush on overheard me singing and said I should try out for @nbcthevoice. That was the first time I ever heard of the show, but growing up with Idol and AGT got me interested. As much as I wanted to do it, however,, I always kept pushing auditioning back due to school/life/touring/etc. I thought I had my chance when I was 23. I had just left my bluegrass band and there happened to be an open day where I could be part of the open call auditions in LA. I went and auditioned. It went nowhere. So I spent two more years focusing on my craft, meanwhile my spam folder kept getting emails from NBC. One day, as I was cleaning it out. I noticed an email from a new thing called @thevoicecastingopenmic, where I could potentially get a spot playing @thehotelcafe. I sent them my music in June 2018 and forgot about it. I did the bare minimum, and assumed thousands of others would put in their portfolio and get a longer look. Welp, fast forward to December 2018, where I get a phone call from a rep saying they liked what they were hearing and wanted me to not only be in the open mic, but wanted me to go to audition for the show! So now I’m proud to say you’ll see me sing my heart out for the Blind auditions this season of The Voice. Series premiers 9/23. It’s that time of year where high schoolers take up studies at Notre Dame’s Summer Scholars program. As a guest lecturer for Jayson Bimber’s Photography class, I use the opportunity to lead a workshop where we make a collaborative and very experimental stop motion video. An opportunity to string images together to create sequences of transformation and movement, it’s always a fun and challenging exercise. Every year brings different ideas and outcomes, with exception of the banana. Somehow a banana makes it into every video, likely the result of asking students to collect props over lunch....

Notre Dame has a Summer Scholars program, and I had the pleasure of guest lecturing to the photography class taught by @jaysonbimber. Additionally, I guided the students as they made a collaborative “exquisite corpse” style stop motion animation. Experimental in nature and a way to put photographs into motion, here is an excerpt from our adventures that day.

These young men gathered around a map of the world.

At first, Mr. May’s lesson started off as simply identifying countries on the map that their families were from.

They were then asked to find were Barack Obama and Amy Tan’s family were from.

From this they drew a comparison between the two, both had to endure struggles in life in order to obtain a greater goal. Though Tan & Obama came from completely different walks of life, both had too face great adversity because of their heritage.

Mr. May then connected Tan & Barack’s life journeys to the ones these young men could experience in the upcoming years. He touched upon the importance of reputation and image in today's society.  He concluded with a discussion about the adversity faced by people of their age and descent.
