Intervallo: The Great Lakes Central, No Longer
Once again I will take a little break in the month-long series of posts on the Great Divide in New Mexico. Here we'll see a chase of a very short train on the Traverse City branch of the Great Lakes Central, now owned by Watco. (Heritage of the line is Pennsy/GR&I.)
Fighting difficult lighting here, our little train has gone through Summit City and is now just south of, and rolling toward, Kingsley, Michigan. Odd bamboo-like grass grows along the railroad in this area.

Traverse City Turn, 6 of 7
Last Friday I was able to squeeze off some shots of Great Lakes Central’s Traverse City Turn—I’ll put up a series of posts here to illustrate this (6/7).
Our train is further along the branch by this point—having just climbed out of the Traverse Bay area. To let us know this, the train has just gone through Summit City. I’m really fond of the going-away shot here and would like to bag a northbound at the same locale.

Summit City
This is the Traverse City Turn of the Great Lakes Central. This rural spot is to be found just east of Summit City, Michigan. This branch line was built in 1872 by the Grand Rapids & Indiana and would later become part of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Hoppers, Part Three
Completing a small series of posts, our train of empty hoppers has made it most of the way up the branch to Walton Junction. This spot was once a small burg called Summit City. The Great Lakes Central TC Turn is seen powering by a couple of old foundations, perhaps from a depot or freight house.
As an aside: I was attacked by ground-dwelling hornets immediately after I made the final image seen here. The tiny beasts sent me running to my car at full tilt, stinging me along the way.

Milky Way
It’s the night of the New Moon, so I thought I’d try to shoot some stars. This image was taken at Summit City, in the upper lower peninsula, as it’s called here in Michigan.
This spot is along the former Grand Rapids & Indiana branch to Traverse City (later Pennsylvania Railroad).
