Southbound Slingshot
This train, called a Slingshot by the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, is southbound in Pontiac, Illinois. The idea was to run several, small TOFC trains each day between Chicago and St. Louis on the former Alton. Every time I saw it the train was mostly empty. The locomotive is ex-GM&O 619, an EMD GP35.

Yesterday at Conway Scenic we turned GP35 216 on the turntable. Now the high short hood is facing south. This directional change was performed for operational reasons, but has also opened up a variety of photographic possibilities, especially on the return run of Conway Scenic’s Mountaineer from Crawford Notch. The GP9/U25B/GP9/GP35 (L&N 1115) consist looks like it might have been sitting for a while based on all of the white exhaust headed skyward.
