Hi! If you're still taking prompts, may I ask for JemmaWill +“Hey–I don’t think I can walk.”?
Will’son the ground. Light and sound are everywhere, filling up his senses. For a few heartbeats he’s sure there’s been a cave-in, butthere’s air and space to move and—he lifts a hand likehe thinks he can catch it—sunlight falling on him.
What?
“Will!”There’s a woman, light dripping from her hair like she’s anangel. Her hands are on him, feeling his chest, his pulse, his head. His fingers curl in her hair without him meaning them to and justwhen he’s about to snatch them back, her cheek tips into his palm.“You’re okay,” she says. “You’re safe. You’re on Earth.”
Earth? He was just in the caves, thinking about whether he wanted to eat orsave what little food he had left for the next day, and now he’s…
Heturns his head, sees slick tiles flooded with sunlight and glassdoors letting it in. Beyond them he sees shadows that might bebuildings. He’s on Earth.
“How?”
Hisangel’s still touching him, her knuckles dragging down his cheek ina gentle circuit. “It’s a long story and-”Thunder rolls, so close he can feel it in his teeth, and underneaththe sound is a roar that setsevery nerve in his body on edge.
Whenit passes, she’s half-beneath him with one of his arms cradling herto his chest. With the new angle, he can see some sort of machineacross the room. Hell if he knows what it does, but there’s abright blue cube glowing at the heart of it. Every instinct in hisbody is telling him to put as much distance as possible between thetwo of them and it.
Insteadof pushing away like he expects—he hasn’t seen soap inyears, just the smell of him must be enough to make someone gag—shetouches the skin above his collar in a faint request for more room.
“And,”she finishes once he’s looking at her, “we really need to begoing.” She shifts to her knees, pulling him with her.
“What’sgoing on?” After so long it’s really no surprise his eyes driftto the window again—the sunlight stings, but it’s the secondprettiest thing he’s seen in years (coming in very close behind hisangel)—just in time to seea jet zoom past, narrowly missing the sides of the skyscrapers.Indignation over who would dare fly that low is rising up in him, butis quickly squashed when a green blur slams into the jet’s nose, sending it spinning off-course.
Herbottom lip disappears behind her teeth. “It’s all verycomplicated.”
“Yeah,”he says. He can see that.
“Butwhat you need to know immediately is that I stole that machine-”she points to the one that makes him want to run- “from a Norse god, who was planning on using it to start an interstellar war, so that Icould bring you home.”
Hetakes a second to process that. And then another because he cannothave heard right. “Okay,” he says when his brain provides no moresensible explanation.
“Thegood news is that it worked!”
“Andthe bad news?” Will asks, knowing better than to hope there is none.
Herexpression falls, but for some reason there’s still a light in hereyes that doesn’t match what she says next. “Loki brought about aglobal terrorist group’s uprising several years early inretaliation. But the Avengers are on it!”
Willshakes his head—it’s starting to ache the way it used to after hespent too long in the dive pool, probably his body’s trying toadjust—none of her explanations are really explaining anything.
“Hey!”The sharp voice snaps his angel’s attention over his head. “What’sthe hold up?”
“He’sadjusting,” she says, equally stern. “And what are you doing tohel- what is that? Did you stealone of Iron Man’s gauntlets?”
Willtwists around in time to see a man wearing, yeah, a big metalgauntlet step up to the machine.
“Technicallyit’s still in the tower so it’s not stolen yet,” the man sayswhile he gently eases the cube free of its moorings. The lights flickeroff, but the cube continues to glow. The fingertips of the gauntletsmoke gently. “Hurry it up. Thor and Loki are really going at it upthere, there’s no telling how long this roof’s gonna hold.”
“Andyou’re taking the tesseract because…?” She stands, handsgoing to her hips in a move that makes her look like a scoldingmother.
“Doyou want the Chitaurito show up? Or whatever it was that scared you so bad on Maveth?”
Will’sangel blanches.
“Right, that’s what I thought,” the man says. “Now move!” He’s outthe door without another word.
“What was-?” Will starts to ask.
“Thatwas Ward,” she says while tryingto pull Will up with her, but his legs are kinda soupy. In fact, nowthe adrenaline of shock is wearing off, his whole body’s feelingkind of empty and heavy. “Hehelped me bring you back. Which I’m afraid means I’m going tohave to forgive him—assuming he doesn’t betray us all before theday’s over, which is a genuine possibility.”
Willsags, falling against her leg. “Sorry,” he says automatically.
“It’sokay.” Her voice is completely different. There’s none of theanger she wore while talking to the man, just a sweetness that makesWill’s heart ache.
“Idon’t think I can walk,” he says. He means to follow it up withgo on without mebecause if this building’s really gonna cave in, he doesn’t wanther inside it when it does, but she steals his breath when shetouches his face.
“Whateverhappened to doing something when the odds are impossible?”
Hisdad used to say those words to him. They were half-exasperation,half-pride at all the things Will had done despite all the naysayers, his dad included.Hearing them now, from a woman he’s never met, the impossibility ofthis entire situation crashes down around him. Has It finally gottenhim? Is this the insanity the others suffered?
Butthen she kisses him, just once, so quick he’d think he imagined itif she’d put more than a breath of space between them. “Let mehelp you. We’ll make it together.” It would never give him a hallucination as good as this.
Hedoesn’t know who she is or why she went to such lengths to savehim, but he knows he’s on Earth with a beautiful woman who looks atand touches him like he hung the stars. He’ll follow wherever she leads.
do I like them: eh, he’s alright. Just kidding, I love this idiotic sweetheart way more than I should. :P
5 good qualities: He’s so endearingly sweet. It’s hard to find male characters in fiction that are so unapologetically sweet to people, and it’s lovely. He’s incredibly loyal (which is also a problem) but I do love that about him. He is shamelessly a nerd (I mean how often do you see characters unapologetically obsessed with church architecture?) and it makes me happy. He holds himself to a very high standard morally, which again, causes him problems, but is a good thing. And he’s very attractive and charming. No wonder Mary fell in love with him, because I did too.
3 bad qualities: He’s prideful in a i’m-going-to-beat-myself-up-if-i’m-not-perfect sort of way, so if he doesn’t live up to his own ridiculously high standard, his pride is wounded. He’s overly loyal to the point where he’ll ruin his life and the lives of others because of his loyalty. He’s also kind of awkward (which is also endearing to us modern viewers but perhaps not so much in the time period).
favourite episode/etc: I mean, I kind of have to say the S2 Christmas Special. I mean, really, there’s not much that can beat that episode.
otp: do I even have to say it? anyone who has looked at my blog for ten seconds can figure it out.
But if you’re really new here, Mary x Matthew is my otp.
I love them so much.
brotp: He and Tom make an awesome brotp
ot3: uh? he and Mary and Tom being awesome together? but you should add Sybil in there because she obviously lives
notp: Matthew and death. but really Matthew and anyone but Mary (…yes I wrote a fic that was sort of Matthew and Sybil but it wasn’t at all)
best quote: “You’ve lived your life and I’ve lived mine. Now it’s time we live them together”
head canon: He and Mary live happily together with their children George (b.1921), Violet (b.1923), Lily and Beth (b.1926), and William (b.1931), weathering many storms but always coming through stronger and remaining completely and happily in love.
