jamie !! what is woe.begone!! i am Intrigued

WOE.BEGONE (i have been lazy with the caps but that is technically how it’s stylized) is a scripted audio drama that is entirely written, produced, composed, and performed by one guy, which is impressive because pretty much all of those things are done really well

it’s the story of mike walters, who is creating a podcast about an ARG called WOE.BEGONE. he quickly discovers that when he completes tasks for the game, reality is altered as a result. things that happened… well, unhappen. but as the game goes on, he has to do uglier and uglier things, and all the while he keeps trying to get to the heart of the game: who’s controlling this? how? and what will he do to win?

w.bg bills itself as a “scifi/mystery/horror/comedy in that order” but i think it’s worth reiterating the horror: there are descriptions of self-harm and self-mutilation, murder, and death, as well as a healthy dose of unreality just from the premise. but each episode is appropriately content-warned both in the description and verbally at the top of the episode. there are also (mostly accurate) transcripts available on the website for free, although the interface for accessing them is a little funky imo

this show features: theoretical physics, paradoxes, jokes about murder, a lot of black comedy in general, some really incredible original music, fraught friendships, a guy who sends emails in all caps, time fuckery, and a gay man who has something deeply, deeply wrong with him (affectionate). listen on your podcatcher of choice today!

9. do you keep any dnd superstitions? (e.g., dice jail, “charging” dice on the lowest side, etc)

i charge my dice sometimes but it’s not something where i’m like “oh fucc full moon gotta charge them” but when my roommate does it i also do it bc why not

i also roll my dice at the beginning of each session to see which one “likes me” aka has the highest roll, and then usually when i roll really high/hit a nat 20, i’ll keep rerolling that dice until it hits a nat 1 just to balance it out

10. what got you into dnd?

back in senior year of hs @sarimvnok got really into critical role and i’d been like. eyeing d&d for a while bc like. fantasy roleplay what is there not to enjoy, so we tried to get a campaign going that fell thru but ya i think bea yanked me in

14. a common stereotype about players that applies to you?

i’m bisexual so i constantly play half-elves (i have frustrated my one dm, noah, bc i play a half-elf in pretty much every campaign i’ve ever been in with him, I JUST LIKE THEM A LOT NOAH--)

also in our first campaign i played an edgelord chaotic neutral rogue bc i was new to d&d but she’s growing now she has more trauma to work thru

nat 20. most memorable crit success?

i dunno how much i can call it a success but early on in tipsy rogues (aka the one w my half elf rogue edgelord) i rolled a nat 20 on perception in a room where there was a dog statue that was like. some kind of mimic or some shit, and noah went “it’s just a dog” and then immediately had us roll for initiative. like homie i should have SNIFFED THAT OUT but whatever

my other nat 20 that was really memorable was an npc nat 20. we had a ballroom episode in gauntlet and his boyfriend had been taken and had his memory modified, and it was the two of them in a basement stairwell and his boyfriend (brainwashed!) attacked him, so i had my lad (a bard, his boyfriend is a druid) roll an intelligence check (i think i set the dc at 15) to remember what spell he needed to cast to get rid of the modify memory (i only had him roll bc it was like, an Intense Moment and i’m about the drama) and yeah he rolled a nat 20 to remember it was very poetic that whole session was poetic the initiative orders just lined up really nicely

What they smell like: he smells like soap. particularly a very floral scent from a plant on vulcan

How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): flat on his back with his hands resting on his stomach when he sleeps alone, curled up in a ball facing his partner’s chest if sleeping w someone

What music they enjoy: classical from both earth and vulcan

How much time they spend getting ready every morning: um with that eye makeup? he spends forever getting ready (much to bones’ vexation--he needs to use the bathroom too)

Their favorite thing to collect: chess pieces!!! he has some from all the worlds he visits

Left or right-handed: ambidextrous but favors his left hand

Religion (if any): jewish! (amanda is as well)

Favorite sport: he likes a lot of dancing, particularly ballet

Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): museums of course, especially science. he also likes doing whatever his traveling companions enjoy as well (eating local food w kirk, relaxing w bones, doing physical activities w uhura, sightseeing w chekov and sulu, artsy things w chapel, etc)

Favorite kind of weather: rain! light showers especially; they don’t get a lot of it on vulcan

A weird/obscure fear they have: he’s afraid of dropping small creatures (animals, babies) when he’s holding them even though logically he know he wouldn’t drop them

The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail: the ones where u have to take the circular rod and guide it off the metal maze w/out it touching and then u get a prize
