Codex Entry; “The Warden Sunmari”
Most who first met the peculiar mage would have had their reservations about Duncan’s decision to bring her from the Circle Tower of Ferelden. She was pale of complexion with raven black hair and piercing gold eyes, up-turned at the ends. Her deep, iris lips were always curled into an unsettling grin and she seemed to always have her nose in a black, leather bound journal. The contents of which are still unknown to most but rumors immediately assumed it may have been a tome of nefarious notes and deeds. However, Duncan knew the real Sunmari. As did her fellow future wardens, Daveth, Jory and recent recruit, Alastair. Duncan had first found her at the Circle of Magi. She was miserable, with a sharp tongue and a grim outlook. And she badgered him with questions, some pertaining to his uniform and others that had nothing to do with anything, really. The single encounter with the young mage brought him to question the grand enchanter on her skills and he was surprised to hear the girl was a painfully average student. She did just enough to earn her place at the circle but little enough to avoid being used as an example to aspire to. She was a trickster and played pranks on her fellow classmates and even learned that her humor extended passed them to the staff. Duncan might have left the girl be had the incident not occurred soon after his arrival. An escape attempt gone south that led to a mage gone abomination and a number of Phylactery’s being destroyed. All who was left to take the full brunt of consequences was this very mage, Sunmari Surana. She had played a role in attempting to aid her friends escape from the circle, but it ended in destruction and death, neither of which were outcomes she had prepared for. With the consequence of execution lingering above her head via hand of the Templar order, Duncan invoked the treaties and spared Sunmari from her fate. Little did the young mage know, this mercy was no merciful path at all. She would join Duncan and meet Jory, Daveth and Alastair. She spent time getting to know these men and their respective stories that led them to joining the Grey Wardens. Criminals and lost men, it didn’t matter at the end of the day because Sunmari learned quickly that their pasts mattered little for them. What they did prior, their ideals, and their dreams, they paled in comparison to the one constant that would be forced on them during the joining. Daveth was the first to drink from the chalice and the first to succumb to the Joining that night. Then Ser Jory perished, not by the poison from the Chalice but the blade plunged into his gut by Duncan. A man she prematurely judged as a gentle and soft man. Duncan would look at this young mage with a desperation in his eyes. Her death would surely come if she didn’t drink from the Chalice, but at least if she did, there would be that slim chance she survived. He was grateful when she accepted it despite her apprehension, and he was all the more grateful when she survived the Joining. Being the only one to survive such a traumatizing experience would normally leave your average individual shaken but Sunmari responded interestingly. She seemed manic and optimistic. She’d babble about her tempest magic and pry for knowledge about a plethora of things throughout the fortress. She’d scribble in her journal with a fervent madness that left passerby's questioning what this elven mage was up to. It was odd but perhaps this was simply her way of processing and coping with her situation.
