If itâs not been clear by the May 27th explosion, Iâm deep into the Horizon Zero Dawn fandom and fanfic community (heyyyyy @sunsetofdoom). Thatâs what is currently taking up brain space and probably will until (and maybe after) we get a release date for HFW. That being said, I thrive on my FDTD writers ( @yossariandawn , @fortysevenswrites , @myletternevercame and many others) and while Iâm not deep diving myself into the fandom, I love reading some Zutara fic (@gimmezutara, @zutaraweek). And of course, I canât do this without tagging my girl @notahotlibrarianâ because she gives me such fic blue-balls by telling me about some AMAZING GENIUS SEXY HILARIOUS FIC sheâs working on and then I donât get to read it - HAND IT OVER YOU PUNK!Â
The fic that haunts my waking dreams is a Aloy/Avad fic that borrows some fun troops from Zutara, specifically a certain ruler doing secret masked vigilante things while flirting shamelessly with a headstrong lady with a heart of gold. Iâve realized I need to rewrite much of the first few chapters, so when it ever gets posted, this section might not even be a part of it *shrug*
The Shrike tilted its hood, as if considering her. Aloy grinned. âOh yeah, I know all about you, oh mystical deity. Whoever you are, as much as I hate to admit it, youâve been just what the people need. Inspiring them. I wish I could do that.â
Watching her as she came back around the dead Glinthawk, the Shrike hovered in a crouch until Aloy sat down on the ground next to him.
She watched the wind catch and toss sand, braiding itself between thin branches and scrub.Â
âGrowing up as an outcast, I didnât have a lot of friends.â She said. âAnd all training with Rost, I never really had a chance to want friends. So I kind of got into the habit of talking to myself, if only to hear another humanâs voice after being out in the wilds for so long.âÂ
Aloy sighed and finally looked at the figure she was tasked with humanizing. It was watching her and had never stopped.Â
âWhat Iâm saying is, you not talking isnât going to be a problem for me. They want me to bring you in but I think if the problem of the machines went away, theyâd be less inclined to go after you.âÂ
A new sort of tension ran through the lines and edges of the body across from her. It was weary, concerned, analyzing if she was worthy of being trusted. Aloy swallowed and looked at the remaining bodies of the guards their peers had not yet carted back to Dayâs Height.
âI want what you want.â Her heart tightened at the sight of so many lives lost. âI want to protect these people. Save them in any way I can. And, Iâm not sure why, but I think you and I would be good partners. If youâll have me.âÂ
Acutely aware the Shrikeâs attention never turned from her, she looked back into the dark hood where she could almost make out the dark line of a jaw, the point of a chin. Curiosity would always get the better of her, but she could respect an adherence to and preference for anonymity.Â
The Shrike leaned forward and took her wrist as it lay over her knee. Slowly, he exposed her palm up to the night air.
