If we analyze everything that happened this season, it looks like they were using foreshadowing from the very beginning—starting as early as episode two to frame Nick as a fascist «fucking nazi”. Different characters used that word in reference to him: June’s mom, Luke, Lawrence. It seems the writers wanted us to look back and say: “See? They warned us. You just didn’t notice.”
But here’s the problem: they never showed that side of Nick. Not once. And we’ve seen him up close in countless emotionally intimate, high-stakes scenes over six whole seasons. Until literally the last episode, there wasn’t a single sign of this supposed dark side.
Which makes it incredibly hard for the viewer to accept. And even harder to rewatch those scenes now, thinking, “Oh, this guy was secretly a nazi with macho ideas about power and victory?” When none of that was ever expressed in his words or actions?
So I guess the key line here comes from Luke who, let’s be honest, is gaslighting her (but okay, let’s set that aside for now). He says: “All he ever cared about is you. And because of that you’re gonna run around like he’s some f*ing saviour you’ve been pinning for ever since you came back.” It’s like an explanation of what happened.
And now they want us to believe that someone can love like that selflessly, with deep emotional respect and tenderness and be a nazi? That’s not how it works. Not psychologically.
Fascism and love are rooted in opposite value systems. A fascist, by definition, believes in control, dominance, dehumanization, a lack of empathy. A fascist cannot love in the way Nick loved June. They simply don’t have the tools even to pretend.
It’s just really bad storytelling
