She was upset, and worse yet, she was upset with him. Ivan knew that and he knew he had to make it up to her. Simply apologizing hadn't worked, as she'd continued to give him the silent treatment. It wasn't that he had forgotten her birthday, he just hadn't been able to make it, and it definitely didn't help that he'd turned up empty handed the next day. Now he had to make it up to her, which lead him to walking into the house with the squirming puppy in his hand.
