Cybuster is a good lesson in spinning off the IPs you’re a fan of.
Uh oh, here we go again. [RANT WARNING]
I love the Cybuster in its entirety, from its designs to its in-story saga, but its meta-creation story teaches you that if you can't become part of your favorite IP, spin that love off into your own original take of it.
For those who don't know, Super Robot Wars is a massive cross-over simulation RPG series in which the stories of many giant robot anime are mashed together into one (mostly) coherent plot, like one professionally made epic fanfic. You wouldn't think world-breakers like Evangelion would be able to fight side-by-side by hard-science military gear like Gundam's mobile suits and the galaxy-piercing Gurenn-Lagann, for example, but there it is, and they make it work. That's the magic of Super Robot Wars.
However, because it is a massive cross-over, Banpresto (later Bandai-Namco) would have to secure IP permissions from multiple copyright holders (i.e. corporations). What if some don't play ball, or are too troublesome? Banpresto found a brilliant workaround by their 2nd SRW game.
The 1st SRW game had an evil-wizard-overtaking-the-land plot as an excuse to feature SD-fied Mazinger Z, Getter Robo and Gundam units fighting together on the same battlefield, like a child's dream playground action figure Smash-o-rama.
The 2nd SRW was when shit got real. Banpresto decided to incorporate plot elements and characters from each participating series' stories into one unified story, treating each material as faithfully as they can to canon while rewriting mismatching elements to work out in-game.
But Banpresto couldn't secure the rights to one anime series - Aura Battler Dunbine, a high fantasy series where a Japanese boy gets transported to another world of swords and faeries. He's drawn into a conflict against an aggressor nation, using insectoid robots in his battles.
Banpresto was in a pickle. They REALLY wanted to use Dunbine, and time was running out. So what did they do? They took the elements they wanted to use (a magical giant robot, a Japanese youth thrown into a fantasy world), and made an expy.
The first "Banpresto Original" was born.
Like Show Zama was thrown into the world of Byston Well in Dunbine, Masaki Ando was summoned to the subterranian world of La Gias. Both were spirited away to these fantasy worlds because "surfacers" on average possess far more powerful life forces than the natives.
Because they are "surfacers", they're both seen as an extremely valuable battle force, so conflicts on these fantasy worlds eventually begin to center on these characters. Each story details how they come to bear the responsibility over the power they yield.
So yeah, because Banpresto couldn't use Dunbine for their games at the time, they just decided to take what they liked and made their own version. And everyone knew what they were ripping off.
But Banpresto ended up creating one of their most iconic IPs in the process.
First off, Banpresto able to go crazy with developing this Dunbine ripoff into its own monster, with new robots, new lore, and new characters to inhabit this branch-off. Four SRW games are dedicated strictly to the happenings of this ripoff's world.
But most importantly, it started Banpresto on the road to creating its own characters, robots and storylines to walk alongside the anime series they were licensing from to make future SRW games.
It all comes to a head when Banpresto makes a certain game in Nov.2002...
Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 and 2 for the GBA, later to be remade into Original Generations on the PS2 in June 2007. A SRW game consisting of nothing but Banpresto Originals created over the years, like that Dunbine ripoff from 1991.
That one Dunbine ripoff freed Banpresto's minds and got them into creating their own spins off other popular robots over the years - or even make new concepts! - but each robot is unquestionably their own to claim, and it only serves to enrich the DNA of content out there.
So creators out there are free to engage in all the fan-isms they want, but their love for a franchise can/may plant the seed for an entirely different, but equally earth-shattering franchise of their own. But only if they try spinning it off into their own thing.
