Martha continues gushing, absolutely charmed by Bruce’s story about the group of preteens and teens who have deemed themselves the ‘Rat Pack’, living right outside Crime Alley. Bruce would probably do anything for those kids, but he refrains from saying so– God knows he’s gushed too much about them already. 

“He’s secretly a sweetheart, Ma, but you’ll never catch him cracking a smile,” Clark finally pipes up from the driver’s seat, casting a quick, teasing look at Bruce. God, take him away. 

“Oh, but when he came over for homemade ice cream, he smiled,” Martha waves a hand. Bruce is about to tell her that that is, in fact, the extent of the emotes his face can pull off, but Clark cuts over him. 

“No, no, when you really make him laugh, he grins, full-on,” Clark chuckles. “Teeth and all. He’s quite the charmer when he stops acting like a raincloud.”

Bruce can feel himself go red from his ears to his toes; from embarrassment or other, impossible to tell. “Clark.”

“Don’t ‘Clark’ me, B,” Clark laughs. “I’m not going to keep all your secrets.”

This delights Martha, who spends the whole rest of the drive telling awful stories about Clark as a child in an attempt to make Bruce crack a grin. She gets awfully close, but Bruce would be caught dead before he admits that.

No worries, I just wanted to be sure before I started rattling off my little list ^^ Superbat fic recs so far!

The first is Bruce Fucking With the JLA by littlegh0st: Bruce allows himself to get dragged around the Watchtower as a benefactor and guest, all the while Superman's been harbouring a big ol' crush. A very sweet & comedic identity reveal from Bruce, and a little quote snippet that made it to my bookmark: "Yes, you do,” he insists, “I’ve heard Batman call Bruce Wayne all sorts of horrible things. And I’ve interviewed you, you never have a kind word for Batman. You can’t really hate yourself, right?” Clark’s voice nearly breaks."

Next up, Banana Muffin by Mawiiish. Bruce (not Batman!!) is poisoned at a gala, and naturally it's Superman that he calls for back-up. Little does he know that Clark Kent is just yards away, about to come to his aid. Another gorgeous little identity fun, hurt/comfort adjacent, very sweet very funny fic! & a little snippet "Superman would never,” Bruce finds himself muttering because he really wouldn’t. Kal would make a grand entrance, make sure to get Bruce to safety. This person – whoever this tasteless man is – might be tall and sort of handsome if Bruce focuses hard enough on his face, but he’s no Superman. “Pretty sure he would,” mutters the stranger but it’s clear from his voice that he’s smiling, which confuses Bruce. Did he tell a joke?

Longer ones now! This is Interview with a Bat by Musers. As you may be able to guess, Bruce catches a bewildered Clark on his hook at a gala; leaving him with an odd feeling of being both complimented and interrogated by Bruce's words on his journalism. Quick to the billionaire's charm, what follows is 20k of relationship building and identity hints as they both navigate an oddly well-matched dynamic! Culminating of course in fraught identity reveals and some later loveliness ^^ (Very fun comic-like plot explored at the same time, too!)

& the longest yet we have The Long Hangover by CoffioCake. This fic is outstanding. Brilliant plot woven together with the perfectly paced relationship being explored between Superman & Batman, Clark & Bruce, Clark & Batman, and yes, Superman & Bruce. Superman's powers are wavering after frequent exposures to kryptonite, but Kal being Kal won't take the bench even at Batman's heady insistence. Meanwhile, Clark Kent heads investigations into just *why* Superman is being so heavily targetted by kryptonite traps, eventually striking up a relationship with one Bruce Wayne in the process. Brilliant arguments clash between all 4 possible pairings, with gorgeous almost-got-it identity reveals sprinkled along the way. This fic nails it. The plot is great, the characters are amazing, and the relationship build & tension is second-to-none. At the heart of it all is a very worried Batman, and a very stubborn and driven Kal & Clark Kent. Some quotes!! "I'm not leaving you," he snapped. Ten seconds. Switching to infrared, Clark hoped to spot a power source he could disconnect when he realized that the outside panels of the bomb casing were heat sensitive. As long as someone with a measurable body temperature was connected to the casing, the bomb wouldn't explode for... Five seconds. Oh, Batman would hate this plan so much. Clark hugged Bruce, pressing his stomach against the front panel, then severed the straps and pulled the chest-piece away from Wayne. He threw himself up as high and as quickly as he could and, with barely a second left, curled his body around the bomb as it exploded. & “Soft-hearted, my dear,” Martha corrected with a fond smile, patting him on the cheek. “You tend to trust people’s potential goodness so much you lose sight of how they actually behave.”

Does anyone else like superbat but can’t read a most of the fics?

For me it is mostly because of Clark’s characterization.

It is so so clear that so many authors have never even interacted with any Superman media but have just seen the many many Batman/Superman panels that are shared online. I’ll be reading a fic, and Bruce’s characterization will be on point, but then Clark will do or say something so out of character that I rage quit.

Clark is not just the sun to Batman’s darkness. He has his own agency. He is not happy all the time. He carries immense pain with him, similar to Batman.

He often isolates himself, both mentally and physically (heck his equivalent for the Batcave is called the fortress of solitude for a reason.)

He struggles with his relationships so so much. He also struggles to be a good parent to Jon at times. He struggles greatly in finding a balance between being Clark and Superman. He struggles with the weight of his role. His struggles with what the media says about him. He struggles to keep I’m control (or to show people he is in control and shouldn’t be feared.) He struggles to feel Kryptonian. He struggles to feel human. He struggles against xenophobia.

He shares a lot of the struggles of the immigrant community here in the U.S. (specially the Jewish immigrant community in the 1930s) because that’s who he was originally written by.

Some adaptations have done harm to the character, just like they have for Batman, but if Batman still gets to get depth, why not Superman?

Also don’t get me started on the fact that most Superbat fics are centered on Batman instead of Superman. Why does it not surprise me that people write more about the white rich guy instead of the immigrant?

But that’s a rant for another time.

i need help finding a superbat fic I started reading like idk two months ago? It was a non superhero AU and Clark was hired as Bruce's bodyguard because Bruce is being stalked. I only read the first chapter and I've been searching for it for ages!!!!
