Mom, could you tell me, a mere European, what tf supercrawl is? I just went through the tag you got for it and it looked cool but I am not 100% sure what exactly it is 😅😄
My city - Hamilton, Ontario - hosts art crawls on the second Friday evening of every month on James St. N, where there are loads of art galleries. (If you’re not familiar with art crawls, they’re a thing where a bunch of art galleries in an area are open for free and people wander around and check out all the art! It’s really good! IDK about elsewhere but in Hamilton it’s become a huge monthly cultural event and everything along James is open really late and lots of people sell their art/crafts on the sidewalk and it’s wonderful.) This has gotten so big over the years that slowly the September art crawl morphed into Supercrawl, which has gotten steadily more organised over time.
By this point, Supercrawl has become a city-managed street festival that lasts all weekend. The street is closed to traffic, dozens of stalls are set up for artists and makers to sell from, businesses organise promotional events, a bunch of stages are set up for musical acts both local and otherwise (headliners the last few years have included Passion Pit, the Arkells [doubly cool bc they’re from Hamilton and the raddest dudes and always so excited to perform locally], PUP…), and there are big art installations set up along the road. I’ve seen circus acts, boutique fashion shows, and flaming skee ball. Basically, it is the coolest street festival of all time, with a major focus on art and heavily featuring local independent artists, musicians, and businesses!
I know it’s just a local thing, but if you’re ever in the area at the right time - or have the opportunity to be - I super recommend attending Supercrawl, or even just one of the regular art crawls. They’re always the highlight of my month when I have the time to go. The city’s been working really hard to rebrand away from our steeltown reputation and towards the growing arts scene, and while that has involved some issues with gentrification and stuff, it’s mostly been amazing. There’s so much talent here!
This might be a longer explanation than you anticipated but I really am just so enthusiastic about Supercrawl and art crawls and Hamilton’s strengths. There’s a lot of good things and wonderful people here and I really love it (:
