Dragon Rojo Jr. vs Stuka Jr. in a Lightning Match
Who’s who?
Dragon Rojo Jr is in red while Stuka Jr. is in black and blue. Also, I think Stuka is the slightly older competitor here. Both are about equal on the overall pecking board though Rojo at least is in a stable.
How’s the match?
Good, though recently this is Stuka’s 3rd singles match in the last month or so. I wouldn’t say it’s his best, but it’s really nice to see Rojo in singles competition. I feel he used the opportunity to show he can go one on one. Not a bad match, just not as good as the recent title match Stuka had vs... Mephisto... I think that match was last Tuesday and a slight margin above this bout and I think slightly longer.
Gran Guerrero, Ephesto and Mephisto vs Niebla Roja, Angel de Oro and Soberano Jr.
Who’s who?
Gran Guerrero is wearing green accented gear like the guerreros normally do, Ephesto has curved, ram like horns on his mask while Mephisto has a yellow demon mask on.
Niebla Roja is in red gear, his brother Angel de Oro in gold and the youngest tecnico Soberano is in his blue like always.
How’s the match?
Better than the other bout in the Roja/Gran rivalry this week, but not by much. Another round lost by Gran unmasking Roja is still as annoying as it was earlier this week. This match had higher spots though and stage diving will always be a poppable moment. Still, hopefully one of these times Gran unmasks Roja it will lead to a dominate win where Gran still wins the other 2 rounds. Going 2-0 in matches vs Roja isn’t making Gran seem like much of a threat most weeks for getting Roja’s mask at Anniversary.
Marco Corleone, Juice Robinson and Matt Taven vs Volador Jr., Valiente and Diamante Azul
Who’s who?
Marco as always is the giant white guy, teaming with 2 other white guys who aren’t CMLL talents. First the guy in dreads with white boots and tights in NJPW talent Juice Robinson, hot off the G1 tournament NJPW just held. The other guy in purple tights and black boots is Matt Taven of ROH. It’s nice seeing CMLL bring in outside talents, Elgin should be coming in soon too with the Gran Prix happening the first of September.
On team CMLL/Mexico we have Azul in all blue, the short and stout masked Valiente in his shiny multicolored attire and finally their 3rd the recently crowned Universal Champion of 2017 Volador Jr. who is sporting red for tonight.
How’s the match?
Great! Probably match of the week for me, though I will be 100% transparent in saying that I really like Juice and it’s just a treat to have him in CMLL for what I’d assume is the next few weeks until the Gran Prix finishes up.
Still, this match had some good moments like Azul’s ramp dive onto Juice. Hopefully the Gran Prix is being built up and will be even better than last years. I think both Juice and Elgin will add a cool dynamic to the match. This also seems like something anyone can win. If that’s the case team international winning would really help solidify that this isn’t just a Mexico stokefest.
It also wouldn’t be embarrassing to win to team international when they have such good names on their teams like Kojima, Elgin, Juice and Kenny King amongst others. Those names may not be Okada/Omega/Naito, but it’s nothing to scoff at either.
Overall a really nice Friday show, they are certainly on the road to Anniversary having held a big press conference on Wednesday that solidified both Roja/Gran and Sugehit/Zeuxis mask vs mask matches.
