Hi, at what age do you recommend adding calcium to a snake's meal? My little corn Copperchain is now almost 6 months old (2 more days), cause she was a poor eater in the beginning she's still on the tiniest tiniest pinkies and I was wondering when I should start adding calcium or should I have started already?
Hello friend!
Okay, one, Copperchain is the most flippin’ adorable wonderful amazing name and I love it very much.
I’d say that there’s really no “too soon” when it comes to supplementation for corn snakes. Once a snake is an established eater, I start adding just the tiniest hint of a calcium/vitamin blend to the back end of their meals, and I increase that gradually to a light but visible sprinkle over several meals. A small amount goes a long way, and some vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are fat soluble so they’re easy to overdo by accident. It’s better to err on the side of caution and underdo it!
Pinkies are pretty squishy and low in calcium, so you’ll likely see her growth start to pick up if you start supplementing now. Make sure to choose a calcium supplement with low or no vitamin D3, as snakes will get most of what they need from their prey and while a little bit is good, too much is bad.
