Scheer removes Bernier from Conservative shadow cabinet over supply-management critiques

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has stripped Maxime Bernier from his critic role in caucus after the Tory MP renewed his call to end Canada’s supply-management system.

Mr. Scheer announced late Tuesday that Mr. Bernier, his main rival in last year’s Conservative leadership race, was no longer the party’s critic for innovation, science and economic development.

“I have removed Maxime Bernier from the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet, effective immediately,” Mr. Scheer wrote in a short statement.

Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux, currently the party’s science critic, will take over the role on an interim basis, Mr. Scheer said.

Writing in Modern Farmer, Brian Barth explains the latest skirmish in the international dairy wars. This time Canada, at least the Canadian National Farmer’s Union, responds instructionally by touting the Supply Management System that enables our northern neighbor to avoid chronic overproduction.

The wrap-up paragraph of the article moves beyond the econometric model of either system offering instead the vision familiar to many Modern Farmer readers: 

“No one wants to see a farmer go bankrupt, but instead of blaming Canada, perhaps it’s time to take a look in the mirror. Instead of subsidizing milk production to the point that farmers are swimming in it, yet unable to pay their bills, why not offer incentives for diversification and local, direct-to-consumer markets for farmers? A farmer with a small dairy herd as part of a larger mixed operation of vegetables, fruits, grains, and other livestock is much more resilient to price fluctuations—and likely much gentler on the land—than one with 10,000 cows and nowhere to sell their milk."

Following comments made by US President Donald Trump, the NDP is calling on the Liberal government to stand up for Canada’s dairy producers. In a letter sent to the Liberal government, NDP Critic for International Trade, Tracey Ramsey, NDP Critic for Agriculture, Ruth Ellen Brosseau and NDP Deputy Ethics Critic, Karine Trudel called on Justin Trudeau to send the US a clear message and commit to protecting Canada’s supply management system.

“The former Conservative and our current Liberal governments have allowed our supply managed sectors to be slowly chipped away at through trade agreements like CETA and the TPP,” stated Tracey Ramsey. “These concessions have now cleared a path for President Trump’s attacks under the veil of NAFTA renegotiations”.

The NDP has consistently asked the Liberal government to give producers assurances that supply management will be protected going into the renegotiation of NAFTA. The Liberals have been all but silent on their priorities for any future negotiations.

“The Trudeau government must stand up for Canadian workers and Canadian farmers, said Ruth Ellen Brosseau. “This is about more than tariff reductions – this is about the strength of our economy, the health of our industries, the safety of the food we eat and the sustainability of our local family farms.”
