EMERGENCY SHOP DROP, TIP JAR & MEMBERSHIPS: I got laid off and my tablet is broken...

Hi everyone.

This week has been awful for me. On Friday, I was unfortunately laid off from my job. To make matters worse, my iPad (which I use for my art) broke and is now in the shop for repairs. At this time, I'm unable to take on commissions. Regardless, I still need to cover my rent, weekly groceries, and bills while job hunting during this stressful time.

Part of supporting artists and creatives is being okay with them accessing food stamps and free healthcare without guilt or shame.

“They should at least get a ‘real job’ if they are going to be using government assistance.”

Actually, no. If you’re making pottery in your apartment and selling it at local craft fairs or even in your front yard, that’s a job. If you’re self-publishing “trashy romance” novels for housewives, that’s a job. If you’re hand knitting scarves for hairless rescue cats to wear in winter, that’s a fucking job.

Being a creative is a real job that requires time, and skill, and artists are just as hard working and underpaid as everyone else.

If you want new and exciting stories, voices, music, art, etc. you have to provide an environment where those individuals are allowed the time and health to pursue art instead of being forced to abandon their art just to buy groceries.

Pursuing art should not only be accessible to rich people who have the time and money.

On your way to respecting creators you have to respect the length of their work too.

That artist might have only intended to draw that character for a few pictures/comics.

That cos/roleplayer might have intended to play that character only for as long as they were having fun.

That show/podcast might only be intended to span x season(s) and a certain amount of episodes.

That book/fanfic might only be intended to be a certain length with no/a set number of sequels.

That singer might only want to sing certain songs for a certain amount of time.

That streamer might have only wanted to produce a certain kind of content for so long.

They're not bad or selfish for not wanting to feed you creations forever and ever long past the lifespan of the original story, long past it being fun for them, long past their energy and enthusiasm and intentions.

Enjoy what you have now and use it to create fan content or something. Appreciate that it even exists.
