Help people just because you can, not because you're expecting something in return.

I'm an adult with no kids of my own, but friends have teenagers who I love like pieces of my soul. One is really suffering lately with gender identity, sexuality, pronouns, etc. Other adults in their life try to understand, but it seems like no one can come to terms with using non-she pronouns or terms like genderfluid or bigender. In general, as not a parent, just a friend, beyond stressing they can trust me, and call me 24/7 if they need me/feel like they might harm themselves, how do I help?

first you can do your darnedest to educate your friends about the terminology, and how and why it’s vitally important. also how to correct themselves, if they misgender the teenager, and how harmful it can be if they don’t. you could offer to take the teen to LGBT+ events, or support groups. or you can just take them to lunch and let them vent and know they have a safe space with you. 

also, i applaud your compassion and love. that young person is lucky to have someone in their corner like you. so keep trying to set the parents straight, and letting the teen know that you’ve got their back no matter what. good luck love!
