Ermoupoli on Syros is the capital and administrative center of the Commonwealth. Also the island with diplomatic representatives from many surrounding nation-states, kingdoms and other powers.
General Information: A small island group in the Aegean Sea. The name refers to the islands around “cyclic” the sacred island of Delos (the location of one of the most powerful oracle temples in the larger regional area). The islands are all individually identify with themselves, but they come together as a combined whole for trade and defense.
Because of their access to valuable trade from various major ports, Cyclades has access to some obscure and powerful equipment to use for their defense. This would include black powder weapons (much like the elven horse masters of the desert) and the ability to add magical or alchemical influence to those weapons. This includes weapons on their naval ships. This results in the Commonwealth being left alone for the most part.
The island grouping is a remnant of the ancient Minoan Empire. The islands have ruins scattered among them that date further back then even the Minoan Empire, and many adventurers have sought out and looted what they could find. The Commonwealth has especially close ties to Lygos as Lygos has never tried to put the Commonwealth under its control, unlike from closer city states that are part of the Hellenic Republic (Greece)
The Cyclades includes about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos (home of the famous Oracle), Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thira or Santoríni. There are also many minor islands including Donousa, Eschati, Gyaros, Irakleia, Koufonisia, Makronisos, Rineia, and Schoinousa. The name “Cyclades” refers to the islands forming a circle (“circular islands”) around the sacred island of Delos. Many of the smaller islands are uninhabited.
The islands are peaks of a submerged mountainous terrain, with the exception of two volcanic islands, Milos and Santorini. The climate is generally dry and mild, but with the exception of Naxos the soil is not very fertile; agricultural produce includes wine, fruit, wheat, olive oil, and tobacco. Lower temperatures are registered in higher elevations and these areas do not usually see wintry weather.
The Cyclades are bounded to the south by the Cretan Sea.
