TOP 30 STORIES, DAY 18 // ONE LAST NIGHT WITH OUR SISTER
(Sharing my creative process via 30 stories as the http://shorteststory.com/engine campaign runs!)
What I like most about this story is how much of the world is sketched out for the reader with so few words.
The story doesn't have to explicitly say "there has been an apocalyptic event" or "only adults were affected by it" or much at all. It lays out an immediately visible scene with enough details to gesture to the conflicts of the larger world, and it challenges the reader to fill in the blanks.
I think the lines just move so fluidly, and weave together the threads of the immediate scene, the backstory, and the worldbuilding quickly and cleanly. It was a lot of work to get it to flow that way!
