Thinking about starting a Walking Dead fic (big fan of survival media in general but zombies have a soft spot in my heart). Started doing some thinking.
Why these mfs didn't try to post up in a cave is beyond me. Maybe it's just the fact that my hometown has massive caves that sustained indigenous life, and I've been fortunate enough to see most of the accessible parts, so I feel like it should have been obvious.
Caves are carved out by water... Meaning there's a chance that there's still an active water source. And I've drank from one in my area before, plenty of times, so it's safe to use. Caves stay cold af from the underground water source so the heat during summer isn't even a problem. During winter the water doesn't freeze over and all you gotta do is keep a fire going in a well ventilated area to keep warm.
Caves are OP. That's shelter and water taken care of. One entrance, easily guarded. And caves are usually in the forest. Hunting. Foraging. Even farming, if you can gather the material to build a fence for it.
Human waste? Buckets. Make it a job for a group to go out and dump them every day. Hygiene? Fresh water source. Horse troughs. Dump the water outside. KEEP THE WATER SOURCE CLEAN.
These fools. Always trying to build a community out of the corpse of a society that's already failed. Abandon yee houses, abandon yee prisons, unchain yourself from faulty human suburbia. Return to the caves, for they are eternal.
